Re: hurricane chaos
it is so awful! We started a fund in my school, but thats NOTHING compared to what these people need. They are suffering in ways NO ONE should have to endure!

Re: hurricane chaos
It is really heartbreaking...to think that this is happening in our country. I work downtown and I was here on 9/11...never was as scared as I am now...you never know what might happen...and our gov't seems to be incompetent when it comes down to emergency situations...they're playing the blame game now...

Before I say this --- I in no way am unsympathetic to what these people are going through, and I have already donated money---but, why didn't these people get the H E L L out of there before the hurricane came? They had days of advance notice. If there was a category 4 or 5 hurricane predicted for LI would have gotten my a s s out of here, gone anywhere, even stayed somewhere in my car if i had to..

Most of them are poor and a lot of them are elderly...maybe they didnt have anywhere to go? Maybe they didnt believe that it was going to be so bad...thats in the past now-they have to deal with the present now and helping these people out...its scary that the govt doesnt have an emergency plan strategy to help these people out!

I totally agree- if I Were in the situation I would have left, however, this may not be true, BUT I saw many poor people who may not have had anywhere to go, who ONLY have their house and belongings and didnt want to loose it. They were hopeful I supposse.

many dont have cars. dont have a credit card to rent a car. dont have anywhere to go. everything in the world they have is in there home. (which isnt much) they dont want to leave it. its the end of the month, they have no money. no where to go. they are elderly, they are disabled. they aren't givne a plan to get out. they are just told we recommened you get out. no buses, no train, no plan. they are told on sunday that the storm is heading to the east and the worst wont happen.

Re: hurricane chaos
And you know what the scariest thing is...these people have very low job skills and most of them were unemployed...where are they going to find jobs now to make a living...and help to get them on their feet...I am absolutely terrified for them...I really wish I could something-personally-help out a family or something...

most of the people were poor, elderly had no where else to go or werent able to go. and even if people tried think about it massive amount of people trying to evacute at once, not so easy.

I totally feel terrible for what has happened to these people... please don't misundersand me. If I could go down there and help them myself, I would.
I just don't understand how tens of thousands of people stayed behind... it breaks my heart to think that they could have avoided all this if they had just left..

Re: hurricane chaos
it's really really awful all around. the thing is in this country, and this is the people as well as the government, is that we are very spoiled. we never think the worst is going to happen b/c we live in a bubble.
do you think the people of Thailand, India, and Malaysia are blaming their govt for the destruction the tsunami wrecked on them...no. but here we do, because all we want to do is blame. no matter what, no one can predict the exact impact that such a force of nature will have. or worse- we SHOOT at people, rape women, and burn things down- what good does that do!
and you know what, it wasn't the actual hurricaine that caused this, it's a combination of that, the breakdown of the levey system, the fact the New Orleans is BELOW sea level and is basically a bowl, and that it is built on a Marsh.
there is no quick way of solving this problem...but, in many ways like 9/11, it is also a product of our smug 'it won't happen here' attitude.

Jessica, I agree with you... The fact that some people are having no regard for human life there is utterly deplorable... taking a horrible situation and making it worse... snipers shooting at emergency workers... I just can't fathom it!
And everyone is so quick to blame someone else... Its a natural disaster... unpredictable..terrible, tragic, and unpredictable.

They stayed behind because they had no choice.
As you can see on the news, the people who stayed behind (not including medical workers required to stay or patients in hospitals or nursing homes) did so because they had NO MONEY to leave. They could not drive to Texas since they do not own cars and had no money to rent cars yet alone buy plane tickets.
Most were living paycheck to paycheck (if not a few paychecks behind on their bills). And this is just those who did have jobs to begin with.
The people that are on the news are mostly those that were already living below the poverty level and now they are left with nothing.
Trust me, if they had money to leave or access to cars or some transportation, they would have left.
What upsets me is that the city did nothing except put them up in the stadium when they should have use public buses to transport the people out of the city.

Did I hear this correctly on the news this morning...that the governor has ordered police to shoot and kill looters?
