Husband never home......

Husband never home......

My husband is a 1st year resident at Stonybrook Hosptal and has such crazy hours.
He works so much right now that I hardly see him. We are TTC and it just seems a lot harder since he is never home.

Wish us luck

Good luck, I know, my husband is never home either. I feel like I'm a sinlge Mom sometimes, it is not easy, but in your case, hoefully he'll get some good shifts once he's done with his residency and then you'll want him to leave you alone!!!

Re: Husband never home......

my husband starts his residency in July...is it really that bad? tell me the truth!!! what do I have to look forward too? Im abit nervous about this as well. What is his specialty?

1st year residency or really internship is the worst according to my husband. The hours are really long and they get one day off a week. Some rotations give you two but it is not that often. After the 1st year is over it does get a little better. The hours are not as severe. For my husband the second year begins this July 1st. All in all residency is bad and be prepared not to see him that often.
You get used to it though but it is not easy.
I am sure when babies come into the picture it will get harder as well.
I know it is probably not the best time to start a family but I am 30 going to be 31 this July and I really don't want to wait.
My husband is specializing in anesthesia. What is your husband going to specialize in?

Good Luck and just remember you are not alone.

Re: Husband never home......

I hear you on many fronts..im 34 going on 35 so i am going off the pill in april or may...I want to get started plus all this 'medical' talk about risk factors increasing scares me...He is going into pediatrics-so thats 3 year residency what about anestesia???
do you find that your friends dont really sympathize because you 'are maried to a doctor'? I just dont think they understand the sacrifices we go through! it worries me..the student loans, the long hours etc...
Im trying to prepare myself. My husband is currently in england for 4 months doing some rotations so I figure if i can deal with this (although at times not that well) i can deal with residency..at least he can come home!
gosh-thanks so much for your advice!

Re: Husband never home......

It feels nice to know that I am not alone. If you ever need to talk I am here. I give you a lot of credit!! Your husband is away and that cannot be easy. My husband lives in Stonybrook where he does his residency. He kept the apartment he had while he was in medical school there. I don't live with him right now. His parents gave us the basement apartment in East rockaway, which was nice of them. We see each other usually on the weekends. He comes home to East Rockaway or I go to Stonybrook. We have this situation right now because it is better for him to be 5 minutes away from work than to have an hour and so commute. Especially with the hours that he keeps. I would feel horrible if he were driving that long on little sleep. I work in Manhattan so that is why I stay in East Rockaway. It is hard and it is not the best living situation but this is what works for us now. His residency is 4 years. July he will be done with his 1st year. Once his residency is done than hopefully we can buy a home where he plans to work. Most likely Stonybrook if he can. He really likes it there.

As for friends understanding they try but you know deep down inside they really don't understand. They just assume you are rich. That is certainly not the case. We owe quite a bit in student loans. I know that one day we will be in a much better financial situation but right now that is not the case.

I wish you all the best and if it helps remember you are not alone
