Ahhhhhh, that's what I want!!! They're so sweet and gentle. But, until we have a house, I have to just stick with my insane 10lb shih tzu.

That's why we aren't getting one yet...we don't live on our own. I should never have gone and looked at the website because now I really want him

ETA: wc0143, your dog is beautiful!!! ohhh, I can't wait until we are able to get one.

they are wonderful dogs! the breed is not the smartest but they make great pets and need alot of outdoor excersize. they don't bark much instead they howl (i love that). i had one growing up and he had no health problems and was a great pet! they are probably one of my fav. breeds!! good luck!

You csn research online to see if they are the dog for you. THey do need a lot of exercise.

When you do decide to get a dog, please consider going to a rescue or animal shelter.
You are saving a life by doing that. You can start by looking on a site called petfinders.com

Good luck

We have one. My DH could probably tell you more about the breed than I...he's had him for 8 years or so. Ours does not bark and he is as mellow as can be. But he SHEDS so damn much it drives me up the wall.

Re: Huskies as pets

Teacup.....LMAO... there is actully a breed of dog that is a mini-husky... it's called an Alaskan Klee Kai.. they are soooooooo cute!

Any whoo... DH has one (which is unfortunately living with his mother b/c they did not want to 'giver her up') and she is beautiful. She rarely barks, was very easy to train (but not leash train...she kept trying to run with the leash) and has a fantasic temperment. She sheds about 2 lbs of hair a week though, but if you get one of those little han held vacs & do it every night it is not so bad....if you let the hair accumulate for a few days it can be a bit much.

We love huskies...when we move to a place with a bigger yard we are probably going to get another.

Re: Huskies as pets

I have a husky and I love her to death, but she's honoestly a pain in the a$$. She's 6 years old now, but I got her at 6 months and she wasn't house broken and didn't even respond to her own name. I had a really tough time training her and she's still a little unruly. Because of her first 6 months, she's now a very gittery dog, it's hard for her to relax and she's still as hyper as she was as a puppy. But, she's is just the sweetest thing ever. She's very loving and gives kisses ALL the time. She doesn't bark too much, but she definitely does when she wants you to play, and she talks (low howls) to get your attention. I love it when she does that! As for the shedding, she reallt only sheds badly twice a year and the rest of the time i's not unmanagable. They're great dogs, but they need A LOT of attenion, sometimes, admitedly, more than we can give her. But either way, she's a happy dog and she loves her moomy and daddy.

I grew up with a husky my entire childhood. They are great dogs and great protectors. They don't bark.. this is true.. however are very smart.. the only thing abouy mine was that he was very territorial over his food.. not a good thing.. overall they are great dogs and a GREAT breed IMO....
I miss my tiger!!!
They have a long life span too. He lived till 14!!

Thanks everyone for your great feedback and advice.

Regi - we are definitely planning on adopting. Petfinders.com is actually where I found the guy I posted a picture of. As much as I may look at and play with the dogs when I am in a pet store (we have fish right now), I would never buy one there.

Re: Huskies as pets

My Aunt used to show huskies so she always had at least 5 at a time. My cousin grew up along side many of them. They are really the sweetest dogs you could ever have. I love their eyes!! Because they are a larger breed, they definitely need a lot of outdoor space to run around in. My aunt kept the kennel inside but the 'boys and girls' (as she used to call them) would stay outside all day and just sleep in the kennels. Their kennels were like mini apartments!
