Hi Ladies, I've always loved hydrangeas and would really like to have them in our centerpieces at our reception next July. Can anyone give me a rough estimate as to how much hydrangeas usually go for? I know that they will be in season in July so I'm hoping that might lower the cost. I think that I'd like some of my bridesmaid's bouquet's to also feature hydrangeas. Any info would be very appreciated!
:)

Re: Hydrangeas
I was told $5-6 per bloom. I originally wanted all hydrangeas, but they were too expensive

Wow seriously? This shows how little I know about flowers... I was thinking the same thing, oh they must be cheap because I have so many in bushes around my house...

Even though they might be $5 -$6 per bloom (which seems really high to me), keep in mind that you don't need a lot of them to make a bo-k. You prob only need 4 tops, and that will be huge - so compared to other flowers that you need more its actually a pretty good deal when you think about it.
Also, I'd be careful with hyd. In the summer in bo-ks... Esp white ones. They don't withstand high tempatures well when they are cut from the branch and can start to turn brown after not being in water for a while. I would go talk to a florist ab it and get their opinion though... My fmil told me that (she's huge into flowers), but I would get an experts opinion...
Hth!!!

Re: Hydrangeas
I didnt think hydrangeas were that much money especially since they will be in most of my floral arragements in my CP's. I think that quote is extremly high for such a common flower.

Re: Hydrangeas
i thought they'd be cheap cuz they run rampant on LI all the florists i visited said they'd get the hydrangeas imported and because of that, they arent much cheaper than other flowers. they get them imported so they can be sure of the color... i used them. they died the same day. some already came dead! my mom had cut hydrangeas from her backyard the day before the wedding. they lasted over a week and a half.

Re: Hydrangeas
one thing with hydrangeas, some of them don't last long after they are cut and removed from water. they make great fillers though.
we're using them in our Bqks...

the flowers you get at a florist are usually not local. I worked at a florist 4-6 a stem depending on the time of year

Re: Hydrangeas
No, large callas can go up to 8-10 a stem on the high end.

they are expensive..but remember they are a bigger flower so you do not need as many to make up a bouquet :)

Good point! Expensive or not I want them. I have really expensive taste in flowers but the really expensive ones take up a lot of room!

Re: Hydrangeas
I like hydrangeas, but when I met w/ my florist, he said that he doesn't put hydrangeas in bouquets because they don't hold up well as a cut flower...just something for you to consider...

Re: Hydrangeas
Hmm... the pricing doesn't sound so bad, but now I'm nervous about them not holding up. I figure that the ones in the centerpieces will already be in water so those should be okay (as long as I go with a well-respected florist). I wouldn't mind keeping the bouquets in water until it is time for the church. I've seen people do that while getting ready and it doesn't seem like a big deal.
Has anyone else had any experiences with them not holding up, or has anyone else ever worked in a florist and have any advice to share?
Thanks!!

Re: Hydrangeas
I was in two summer weddings where they did not hold up at all - two different florists. I love hydrangeas and wanted them in my centerpieces, but specifically requested them to not be in the bouquets. My florist did tell me if they are sprayed really well that they can hold up. It also depends on the type of hydrangea. The antique hydrangeas hold up much better outside of water. She had told me the blue/purple ones don't hold up well at all.
