I already asked this on LIF, but I was wondering if you ladies could help. (Job)

I already asked this on LIF, but I was wondering if you ladies could help. (Job)

FH had an observation lesson Thursday, and had his analysis with the Principal and AP Friday.

Some background: he's currently a fulltime sub, bouncing from leave-replacement position to leave-replacement position within the district. There are no permanent classrooms available for him to have, but he's contracted at first year teacher salary, not sub salary. (Which is awesommmme)

So, back to the meeting on Friday: Basically, they complimented his plan book and his organization and structure, but then he was told that if a permanent classroom opens up and theres a toss-up between him and another candidate, chances are the other candidate will win out. They advised that he get some resumes out.

Rich is CRUSHED. He puts evvvvvverything into teaching. everything. He's pi$$ed, yet really upset at the same time. Feelings of inadequacy, I guess.

Luckily, he's contracted til June. He needs to find something for September.

This job's location was great, because he's not too far from Queens College, where he's doing his Master's. Oh well.

Anyone have any suggestions, other than mass-produce the resumes?

At this point, he'll take ANYTHING in Suffolk or Nassau. He's very marketable as a male elementary teacher with a background in special ed and inclusion.

The first thing he said to me was, 'If I don't have a JOB, how are we supposed to have our wedding?! ' It breaks my heart that the wedding was on his mind.

Thanks a bunch.

Is working in Queens out of the question? I worked there for two years and the pay is comparable and it is not asas bad as people say as long as you get the right area. And they are always looking especially for special education I taught self contained there and was happy. Also once you work there you are more marketable on the island.........I mean it is just another option

As a last resort, maybe.

He already commutes an hour each way into Nassau from our town in Suffolk.

Thanks for the response, though

Hello! tell him to go on olasjobs.org. This is a website that a lot of the districts use to find candidates for teaching jobs. He will have to fill in all the information once then upload resume and coverletter. What you then do is click on the area you want to work (theres a map) and they will tell you job openings and in what districts. I have done this before and a lot of districts will ask you to go on olas instead of sending a paper resume. Plus, it saves you money and time! Right now the only part of NY that is not on olas is Suffolk, but everyone else is! If you want more info, FM me! Good luck!

Thanks so much - I already put him on OLAS.

Does anyone know of any sites like that that DO have Suffolk?
That'd be awesome!

There are none, you have to do each one individually!

I went through the same thing last year.. I got a great job in suffolk.. this is what he needs to do..
1. get as many recomendations as possible
2. subscribe to the NY times
3. Mass mail to all the school districts
and
4. go on nassau boces and sign up on that list and apply for jobs..
5. Find job fairs..
elementary school jobs are scarce on long island..

I have a great job in a Suffolk School district that I got the whim last year..
School districts love to hear that you like technology, you have a special edu. background and even better if you are a male.. you do have an advantage..

FH is a teacher in queens - he has been teaching for 3 years and is looking on the island right now - unfortunately with the budgets, its hard to get a job - he interviewed at Lindenhurst and he said it went well - but they told him if the budget doesnt pass they can't hire any new teachers (social studies).

i'll send him some teaching vibes for you!

I am also looking for a teaching position for September. It is very difficult, but your FH must not give. He is lucky that he is a male and has the special ed background. Is he in school for his Masters? If worst comes to worst, there is always the city. I know that is probably the last place he wants to be, but at least it is something. There actually is a bronx career fair April 11th and you need to apply online at teachnyc.com if you want to go. There are other ones too, so maybe there is one in queens that he can go to (I'm from Westchester). Please keep us posted on how he is doing. And tell him not to get discouraged, something will turn up.

I don't think they do online resumes. they posted in the NYTimes recently...I am assuming they gave the address they want resumes sent to.... I didn't see any elem. or special ed. positions posted...they were more high school subject areas, but i know for a fact my school is hiring 1 Kindergarten, 1 first grade and 1 second grade because enrollment is so high, we have to open more classes. i am a special ed. teachers and there are no sp. ed. vacancies in my building. (it's an elem. school) it 's tough is i know they were interviewing teacher assistants and leave replacements, so i don't know if they are hiring 'outsiders' at this point.... but it's worth a shot!!!
