Yes nrvbrd you are a classy person. I some experience with these type of parties. Back in the late 70's (I was born in 72), people used to have rent parties. The premise for the party was to cook invite guests who would pay for their food and liquor in order to raise money to pay your rent. This person is trying to do a similar party. The idea is that people invited are supposed to know what the reason is for trying to raise the cash so they can decide whether they want to participate.

Re: I am a classy person really but I seem to interact with people who are not....
That is too weird. My mom is a member of the Ecuadorian Club.... the name is so long its outrageous. Anyway, they do association parties all the time and are always doing fund raisers for the needy in Ecuador, Ecuadorians here, children... That I think is okay.
But at your own home to CHARGE people to come to a party and make them pay??? That is kind of nervy!!
Hey I am having a Hawaiian theme BBQ in a few weeks. Should I charge my BP to come to my house and stuff their faces, drink top shelf liquor, and play the games? That isn't right.
Edited for spelling.

Re: I am a classy person really but I seem to interact with people who are not....
That is NUTS !!!!I would NOT go, that is plain RUDe, she is not 'hosting you' in her home. she is charging you to be there ! just go out to eat for that much !
Funny one, but pathetic as well.
My 20 yr old (immature) cousin, threw a huge party while his parents were away (and they trashed the house, you know how those parties go) and he charged everyone $5 each as they walked in! to pay for beer and everything they ate.
I thought that was obnoxious of him, but yet it didnt surprise me because he's VERY immature and is partying day and nite
I had a coworker who was throwing her own 25th bday party, at a hotsy totsy Russian restaurant in Forst Hills. Well shes one of those people that her and hubby go out to eat EVERY NITE, they lease a BMW (wowww, how cool can i be just like you?
) and they live in a shoebox and wonder why thats all they can afford..you get the picture.anyway after showing off everything she spends on, she asked me this:
How do i tell everyone this: In Russian tradition, you ask guests to bring money, not a gift' should i write that on the invitiation?
my face was
and i said 'NO, you CANT write something like that on an invitation, how can you do that? what if someone wants to buy you a gift? you can obligate anyone to bring money!' and she goes 'well everyone needs to know that im paying $60 per plate and I cant pay for the party unless everyone brings an envelope.Needless to say, I had to let this out and told everyone that was invited, and no one went. they were all disgusted and appalled.
a week later, after she sent out the invites (And didnt write that in them) she was like 'no one can make it, thats weird' I wanted to say HAH HAHHHH!
she winded up being a sourpatch in the happy bunch that we were. i have stories that can take hours to write... Of course I never held back from letting her hear EXACTLY what I thought of her.
sorry to babble.i really dont think you should go to this party.

Ladies, I so agree with all of you.Fh is very close to this woman. They have worked together for a number of years. They have like a mother/son relationship.
He really wants to go.
I will tell you about it on Monday.

Re: I am a classy person really but I seem to interact with people who are not....
Sorry. I wouldn't attend. I could see if she was some big shot at a charity and wanted to raise money for something like a Make A Wish type thing, but this is totally insane. That is one of the most tacky things I can even imagine! But take the money and go out with your DH for a nice night. When my SIL (from MA) eloped out of the blue, Scott and I got her a nice gift. A few days before going up to give her the gift other SIL tells me that a friend is throwing the couple a Jack&Jill and tickets are $20 each (1/2 goes to the people throwing the party to cover costs, 1/2 goes to the couple)
First of all, they are married! When you elope you don't have a shower. Secondly, I do not pay to attend a shower. So I e-mailed her back and said 'We already got her a gift but I would never pay to attend a shower'

Re: I am a classy person really but I seem to interact with people who are not....
wow, that is bad too !!An old coworker of my sisters, A) threw her own shower, and B) put a business card from citibank in the invites with her account # !!!!
my sis had a little problem with this girls mom (she was a travel agent, my sis booked a trip through her and she refused to allow cancellation/reschedule and sis lost money)
so anyway, OF COURSE my sister didnt go. well the day and time of the shower, the girl called my sisters house !! saying 'Are you sure you cant come? please come !! its so much fun!!'
we almost died !!!!!!!!!!

Very tacky in my book. I would never to this and I too would not want to go to the party.

i agree that this is ridiculous. i would ask her (yes, actually ask her) what the donation is for. perhaps it is for a good cause and the gtg is really a fundraising event. if she has the gall to ask for money and not tell you what it is for, you have every right to ask. if she refuses to tell you, then don't go.

I invited Jen to my house on Saturday and little does she know, I will be charging her for anything she eats
She might as well have had the event at a hall.community room and charge, but to charge in your home, that is unheard of, what is her home like, some sort of mansion...then not even then, unless this is going to a worthy cause

If she cannot pay for the food and wants to have a gathering then do a potluck, my sorors and I do it all the time and the next one is at my house. Maybe I should charge them for their company
