I never had a BBQ B4 anywhere else but at my Mothers house... She always supplied the food.... I have to bring the food this time..... Is it normal for the guests to bring things to a party or not?

Yeah people usually bring desserts, like cookies and stuff like that or they make some kind of salads!!

Re: I am a lil confused
Totally depends on the party. If I wasn't asked, I wouldn't bring food (I would bring a bottle of wine or some other gesture, but not food)...
My GTG is a potluck, so it's different, but on the average, if you're throwing a party you supply the food...
ETA - yes, I've brought a dessert or wine, but not an entree dish

I've been to barbecue's where the host asked everyone to bring a sidedish or an appetizer etc. I have never gone to a barbecue and brought like the actual burgers or the steak etc. Unless of course it was like a spontaneous thing amongst close friends or family.

Re: I am a lil confused
...I guess it is a potluck. usually when we invite friends over for a bbq they will bring some things to throw on the grill...or if they want to drink beer they bring that. ( we dont usually have beer).... one girlfriend was nice enough to ask if we had any dessert , if not she would pick up some...
not a big deal to us. I always bring something when I go over to someones home...

Usually the people throwing the party supply the food. Sometimes a friend will ask if they can bring something such as a dessert dish.

Depends I have been to BBQ's where it was everyone bring something (like the party at Marni's) and then others where everything was provided by the host

Re: I am a lil confused
It depends.
If the person is hosting it- meaning Hi I am having a BBQ at my home- please join me.
I would think the owness would be on the host.
As I guest I would offer to bring something.
Conversely if someone says Let's have aBBQ, we will do it at my house, then that implies that everyone will pitch in.

it depends - some hosts prefer to do it all themselves, others like the potluck approach.
Have you been asked to bring sometheing?

Re: I am a lil confused
having said that - I rarelt go to someones house without something - whether its something they asked me to prepare or wine, beer or a bouquet of flowers. It doesn't have to be $$$, its just a gesture

Re: I am a lil confused
I agree with the others usually if it's a party, never should be told, but I like to ask if I can help make something and if not desert or wine, I'll bring.
