I am being plagued by my dress. long vent.

Original post by JessicaM.

some of you may have read on another thread that the cost of my dress is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than what I expected...to the tune of

$3250.00 all told

now, for some girls that might not seem like a lot, BUT I would NEVER EVER EVER have spent that much money on my dress. I went the dressmaker route thinking I would save money, and compared to the dress I am 'modeling' mine after, I am (by about $2000). BUT had I known remaking that dress would cost me this much, I would have picked a different one. I don' even want to see it anymore. everytime I see it, it just looks like a WASTE to me. and not that it's not beautiful, it IS, but I didn't want to spend to much on something I will never wear again. I would have much prefered to purchase some really nice jewelry, that I could wear on my day and on days to come, and remember that I wore it on my wedding day. but now I can't even do that.

I have no idea how to come up with the extra money ( I am COMPLETELY against having fh pick up the slack, even though he may have to) it's just all completely wrong and I am really sad about it. now I even wonder if the first thing he will think when he looks at me is 'THAT costs $3000'- not that he will, but I can't help but think it.

sorry for the vent....I just never expected to be so depressed about my wedding gown, of ALL things...

Re: I am being plagued by my dress. long vent.

thanks for trying to cheer me up ladies.

Lisa, I love your analogy LOL- put that way it makes me feel a little better.

the thing is girls (and this may be an strange way to think, but hey it's me) that I don't have a dream dress, a dream hall, a dream bo-k- I don't have anything except a DREAM of an FH. marrying him is my dream, my joy. anything else means far less. so I don't get so excited about dresses and things...I mean of course I want to look beautiful, but so many dresses more and less expensive are beautiful, so that aspect of it doesn't really move me to feel better. I still feel broke.

I do want to concur with Laurie though- custom dresses run the gamut as much as store bought dresses do, so anyone thinking of doing that please do no hesitate- just get a better estimate than I did before the first cut is made.

anyway, thanks. your efforts are cheering my are not for naught, are not unnoticed, and certainly ARE very appreciated.

No sense in crying over spilled milk so I'll refrain from asking any questions, especially because this is your FH's family. But, how much is she charging for her service? Was I wrong to think that this was her gift to you and she wouldn't have it any other way?
Anyway, I'm so very sorry and as someone with dress drama in her own time I can tell you that it will be worth it. You will love it, you will become the bride that you have in your head marrying your FH. I too never had a dream anything...I picked my dress design the month before my wedding because I thought it wouldn't make me look too fat...I was very easygoing about every decision since I never dreamed of my day or envisioned it. But that day, once I put on the dress, the hair was done, make-up on, perfume lingering I was the happiest I have ever been in my life. Walking out of my house en route to the church will always be my favorite memory. I married my love in that dress. The creation that my mommy made...the creation that drove me insane...the dress that only I could fit into because it's made for me and my body alone.
Yes, it's a lot of money...and yes, it totally stinks, but will it be worth it? You could bet a zillion dollars on it!
I hope you feel better soon...feel free to FM me should you want to vent...I can totally and completely relate!

awh, you know that made me sad - just reading it.

let me just say this, you never did this before! you had no idea what you were getting into - and **** happens.

At the end of the day you have a beautiful dress that was made just for you - by someone I believe is in your family.... is that right? It is extremely special and lucky that you had that opportunity.

edit - because I can not form correct grammatically sentences the first time around.

well said

Jess - there's nothing I can say that these wonderful ladies before me haven't already said, BUT, I've seen your dress, and although it is alot more than you expected, YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL in it. Marrying your FH in that dress will make it that much more special. In the end I think we all spent alot more than we expected one way or the other. Hope you feel better soon!!!

$2k is a BIG savings. I know you don't want to spend $3k, but you're basically getting the dress of your dreams for a big dicount. It will be beautiful and YOU will be beautiful in it!

Exactly. Saving 2k will make you feel so much better. $1500 isn't bad. Have you considered ebay? I found a dress I almost got (yes I almost did the tradition white thing) that was a $1000 in the stores but I found the exact same dress on ebay for $500. slighty bigger too, which is way easier to alter. If you feel that even the price you were offered is too much try ebay. Hey you never know!

Jess.. This is something that would bother me too. I learned that in life, when you try to take the shorter (and in this case cheaper) route, you end up taking the longer (more expensive) way. I know it *****. Believe me. However, the dress is going to look absolutely AMAZING on you... afterall, it IS the dress you intended to have, and so you will. $$$ will not matter come the day of your wedding, so these are one of those things you just have to suck up (unfortunately)

Sorry Jess.

edited because I wantedto add some hugs.
You are going to be such a beautiful bride

I know that this doesn't help bring down the cost, but there are other things that you can do with the dress after the fact. I know of people who have made their kids Christening gowns out of their dress, and even Communion dresses.

Anyway, I'm sure it makes you look like a million dollars, and from what I read from the other girls, it makes you look like more than that.

Sorry you have to go through this!

Jess, you are going to be stunning in your dress and Leo will not think what you say he will think. He'll faint from all the beauty! Anyway, yeah that's a lot of money for a dress but in the end, it's the perfect dress for you. You've had so much fun having it designed for you and you've cut corners in a lot of other areas. Don't let this make you upset and take away from your excitement. You can change things now, so just enjoy it!

Re: I am being plagued by my dress. long vent.

wow ladies. thanks so much for your support.

Sasha, the labor itself is $2500 . there is a lot of sewing to be done by hand, and I am going on the assumption that she's not trying to take me to the cleaners, but I really would have picked something else. When she first saw the picture, she said $1000- I am trusting that the labor was more than she initially anticipated, but honestly I would never call her on it, so I will suck that up and just pay.

I am scrimping in other areas though- instead of buying my jewelry I will try to borrow most of it, and am holding off on any frivolous purchases (no matter how small) I should be ok.

Thanks again ladies. your votes of confidence mean so much.
