Did you ever hear about the Kitty Genovese Story? This woman was murdered and nobody got help!

People are idiots. Its called diffusion of responsibility..i learned about it in psych classes...it s apparently so common!

She just texted my phone to tell me that she's ok, and that she wasn't admitted and they let her go. I didn't get full details since it was via text.

But she did say that the scan actually picked up that she has an enlarged thyroid. I don't know what that means exactly, but she needs to go get that checked out now.

I have a really bad feeling that this could have been a blessing in disguise, because had she not fainted, she never would have had a scan to find that out.

I'm going to have to ask for prayers now that there is nothing seriously wrong with her. I have a thyroid issue myself, and while it is not enlarged and not cancerous for me, it seems now that thyroid problems run in my family, so please pray that she is OK.

Don't worry too much yet. If thyroid problems run in the family, this may be it. How old is she? sometimes enlarged thyroids have to be removed, because it causes the thyroid to be hypoactive. Synthroid usually helps this. Only 5% of enlarged thyroid nodules are cancerous. Most of them are benign. Thank God it was caught early. Everything happens for a reason Ali :O) If you need anything let me know!

i always read that news article with the kids when we do Night, which we just started today.

i'm so sorry about your sister. i'm hope her tests come out okay keep us updated.

Now that I got home and heard the story from her, it's a little more acceptable. My father was either misinformed, or exaggerating, but it is still pretty awful.

Apparently what happened was her class is in a computer lab, so the professor asked them to stand up so he could see them. So he was droning for over an hour, and everyone was standing. Now, she's an art major, so not only is she used to standing up for 2 hours at a clip painting, she's also used to inhaling paint fumes and turpentine. But listening to this guy for an hour put her over the edge...and that's when she passed out, fell straight back.

Now, keep in mind there were people standing next to her, in front of her, behind her. Wouldn't your first instinct be to at least try to put your arms out if someone was falling straight back on you??? Well, they just parted like the sea, and let her fall.

The professor didn't do anything because he didn't speak english very well. Apparently it was his first class he ever taught. I guess he's going to go back to japan and commit hari kari or something. Ok, that was a little offensive, but I'm allowed a free pass tonight I think. The TA had somebody call campus security, who in turn had the campus volunteer EMTs come, so thats where my father was mistaken, somebody did call, just not an outside 911.

But now my gripe is with the hospital. The EMTs basically just made her tuck and roll, left her in the middle of the ER, stranded, in a wheel chair. Then the nurses and stuff in the ER were yelling at her that she was in the way. She was like I don't even know where I AM right now, let alone know that I'm in the way. That's when she had to call my parents, because nobody asked her what her name was, if there was an emergency contact, anything. Thank god we live 5 minutes from the university and the hospital and that my parents were able to get to her quickly, because she seriously didn't even know where she was.

So then it took HOURS for her to even get the scan or checked. My father had to start yelling and causing a scene because her eyes were like rolling back into her head and she wanted to go to sleep, and at that point we didn't know she didn't have a concussion, so if she would have fell asleep, NOT GOOD.

She looks like crep right now....white as a ghost. She seems to be in pretty good spirits, and is laughing at herself, and doesn't seem to be too concerned about the thyroid thing. They said sometimes it's caused by a lack of iodine in the diet, which is bizarre, but she's going to go to the regular MD and luckily I see one of the best endocrinologists on the island so she'll be able to get an appointment very quickly if needed.

So at least everyone wasn't staring at her in a pool of blood like my father made it out to be...but they could have attempted to catch her!!

First off, I am appalled that no one called for help. This should be brought to a dean's attention IMMEDIATELY even though she is okay now. Still, it it happens to someone else and more serious, it could be a very serious problem.

Secondly, I too have thyroid issues, they are not fun. I know when the gland is enlarged, it usually isn't serious. I will pray though and hope that it's okay!

ugh that really ***** to hear that! I'm sorry that it happened! Unfortunatly, the ER has been unusually busy, to the point that we don't have enough room for all of the people that come in. one of the reasons that it's so busy is, as people loose their jobs, they also loose their insurance, and so now they have no doctor. They come to us when really what they need is a doctor, but they can't afford one. This makes the ER dangerously busy. This is something that is going to get 10 times worse for sure, and it's scary. Believe me, it's really scary for all of us. Something needs to be done, and we try our best in the ER to do what we can to make it better. But unfortunatly, this is a scary trend.
This being said, there is NO EXCUSE for the way that your sister were spoken to. Yes it's unfortunate that she had to wait in the hallway, with the situation the way it is, it's unavoidable. But not having things explained properly, and instead, having the staff treat you like your not a person, and not important is unacceptable. Ali, I am going to take this to the nurse manager, and if you can get names and FM me I would appreciate it.
We all have to work together to make this world a better place ;O)

Glad that she is 'ok' for now. I hope that when they check her out, everything is good.
