I am having my reception at a very small place and truly have been forced into inviting a ton of people i didn't care to come. So we eliminated inviting people with guests if they're single and haven't been with someone for a significant amount of time. I FREAKED when one of Fh's friends replied with a guests after not being invited with one. I called FH who is very busy and told him to call him and tell him he's not invited with a guest.
I took it upon myself to e-mail this person. Very apologic and said we were too packed to have people bring guests. I know FH is gonna be mad...but I'M SO NERVOUS we won't fit everyone.

FH and I have had to make that same phone call 3 times already. Some of these people wanted to bring a GF or BF that neither FH nor I have ever even met!!!

Here's my opinion.....if someone has the complete audacity to add a guest when they have obviously not been invited w/ one, you should NOT in any way be made to feel rude about politely reminding them that the invitation was for ONE person...........

Just explain that all the single people not in long term relationships were invited without guests, it wouldn't be fair to the others if you allowed this in one case and not for all.

That's really a tricky one! FH and I hit it from the beginning and we are now getting married. Some people can have a more serious relationship in a shorter amount of time that other people.
I am not sure length of time is a determination for a relationship to be serious.

agreed! some people called to ask if it was okay and since we aren't going to hit our minimum i said fine. but others that just added a guest without asking really pissed me off!!!!

Re: I am gonna get in trouble for this one
you've got to do what you've got to do. if you're room can't accommodate more people, or maybe its the budget, whatever. You shouldn't have to explain yourself and hopefully this person will understand.
BTW, I have the same fears however, so I know these things are easier said than done. One of my friends - who is not with anyone and I have no plans to invite her with a date - made a comment about 'well, hopefully by your wedding I'll be able to find a date.' I was speechless.

If you haven't gotten all of your replies back yet, you might want to hold of on saying whether people can bring guests or not in the event that you have more no's than you accounted for. You may need people to bring guests to make your minimum. I would just be honest with the people and tell them that as of now, you cannot bring guests b/c the hall is already packed out and you cannot fit anyone else, but in the event of cancellations, you will be allowed to bring a guest. That is what i would do.

Me, too. Our max capacity at the hall is apparently 189 while our BM told us they repeatedly seat 230! anyone else seen this problem??
We've only sent STDs to people on our A-list but FMIL called to ask why some of her co-workers and close friends (who are barely on the B-list)didn't receive their STDs and FH told her we sent them! IMO, we can't send STDs to people on the B-list until we're sure we can invite them. I don't want to miss our minimum, but I don't want to have a fire marshal show up and shut down our party!

Ditto, but I would still feel afraid to call someone up and say that.

Re: I am gonna get in trouble for this one
Using your own rule, it may help to modify it with our hidden rule: no guests if they weren't already dating 6 months before the wedding...that way no surprises for those who suddenly become NOT single.
