I am in love with Kevin and I am so sad

Original post by Sassyz75

OK.. so I'm in love with an American Bulldog in the Mall that I have named Kevin.. (funny, I know).

I know you aren't supposed to buy dogs from the mall- but I was just looking about last week and made the mistake of playing with this very cute American bulldog.

I know I can't have him, (plus, he's $2k) but my heart is breaking.

I can't stop thinking about that little scamp..

everyone- tell me it would be mean for me to have 2 15+ pound cats and an American Bulldog in a 900 square foot apartment!!!

You can also give them a deposit and they will hold him for you.
I also got my Siamese 16 years ago from a Mall pet shop and she is the best animal I have ever had. Even Ron (not a cat man) says we will never find another cat like her.
sorry if I am making it harder.

DH and I have come to a compromise- as much as I am in love with this dog, I can't have in right now- it's just not fair for the dog- especially w. me in school. He did say that when I got my MBA I could have ANY dog I wanted....
It still breaks my heart though

I'm sorry, I know it's hard to not be able to get a pet when you really want it.

We really want to get a mastiff for our Lab to play with. And a couple weeks ago, we were looking at breeder sites with pictures of puppies, and I wanted to get one so bad. But I am the voice of reason who knows we can't do it if we're not allowed to have two dogs in an apartment because then we'll just be stuck if we can't find nowhere to live.

I feel like crying though when I see dogs at shelters because I really want to get from there, but FH says he has had bad experience with shelter dogs with his family. I don't care, we are going to get some from there. Maybe when we do get a mastiff, I can find one in a shelter that is purebred, so he will cave.

YOU SHOULD NOT GET A DOG FROM A MALL!!!!

You are doing a dissevice to the breed, by purchasing him. The price is really high, and you will be playing high doctor bills. I am sorry to eb a sowner, but PET STORE DOGS ARE HORRIBLE.

They are inbred, and come from puppy mills.

Look for a private reputable breeder and get one from them, you will be much better off.

I am banned from pet stores, and dont even get me started on Petfinder. I want to rescue every dog on there, called DH once in tears b.c a dog was going to be euthanized and spent two days finding him a home (not mine ) It is SO hard not to want to take these puppies home to give them a good loving home.

Just think of it this way, I am sure another loving family will come along and give Kevin a good home

But Erica- what about the dogs and cats in the pet shops? should they just die alone and homeless or kept in that tiny crate because we do not agree with pet shop practices? I am NOT a fan of pet shops BUT the pets didn't do anything wrong. Poor things

The thing is, you will have to put so much love and money into these animals that you will in the end be more heart broken then if you don't buy it.

If people stop buying from the pet stores, they wioll nto be bred as much.

Buying form the pet stores is really do a disservice to the breed.

I remember one time I was crying over a listing where I saw a three-legged dog was going to be put to sleep if an owner wasn't found. We contemplated taking it, but the apartment we were in didn't allow dogs.

Is a pet store dog bad if it has papers? Like if they provide you with a family tree, like the history of the parents and so on? FH got that with our lab.

Just becasue they ahve papers, just mean that the mom and dad are full breeds, it doesn't measure the quality of the breed. The dmaes should not be pregnant all of the time.

I find pet store dogs heartbreaking. They just keep them in a cage all day without really any toys. It's so sad.

I remember my friend used to work at one when I was younger. One time she had to go there on Thanksgiving morning to feed them, and I went with her, and I was having fun, letting a lot of the animals out and playing with them.

I was so close to telling John- too bad I'm getting him , I don't care if we even get evicted.. but I just realized we don't have the money- to buy the dog yes- but for the other things- getting him fixed, getting him regular shots, another animal to feed, etc etc...

we'll have to wait

AWWW DINA!!!!!!!!!
I'm so sorry!! You know what a pet lover I am....that's how I ended up with cat #2!!!!!
I was at PetSmart getting food for cat #1 and there was a woman out front with a box of kitty's just GIVING THEM AWAY....
Apparently her cat had kittens and she kept 3 of them, but couldn't keep anymore....
I took one home :) and DH wanted to KILL ME!!! But now he is in love....

BUT - a dog is a totally different thing...and they do need SO MUCH love and attention. It's just not practical right now with your lifestyle's (being away from the apt. that much!)

I am so sorry and I know how your heart breaks...I don't even go into pet stores b/c seeing all of the animals in those tiny cages makes me cry...literally....I cry standing there in the pet store....no joke! (MrsTC - you know what I mean, right?)

You're doing the right thing....and when you decide it's time...go to a breeder or a pound....b/c if Kevin is breaking your heart right now - Seeing what his parents live through would kill you!

You will be much better off, puppy's can not hold it for 12 hours, and they are expensive. I know you really wnated him, but in the long run when you finally are ready to get a dog, it will be a much better experience. You will have a healthier and happier pet, if you get a dog when you have the tims and the space.

Thanks!

DH was like. you CANNOT name the dog Kevin...

I was like, why not? how funny would it be for us to be in the park and say 'kevin, kevin' and then a dog comes over!!! ha ha ha! too much.

We also thought it would be funny to name a dog Christopher!!!!

My Sixteen year old Poodle is from a Pet Store. I love him, he's the best dog ever. But I do agree, my mom and I have said over and over that we're never getting another pet from a pet store.

You'll get through it!!!

I feel for them...i really do...but by buying them you are creating a demand for more puppymills...and $2K is probably triple what they paid...so they are making a great profit...and they will want to do it again...

put your name on a rescue now...then when a puppy comes available it will be at a better time...and you will be doing a better service...

papers don't mean anything...inbreeding dogs with papers is still bad...
