OK.. so I'm in love with an American Bulldog in the Mall that I have named Kevin.. (funny, I know).
I know you aren't supposed to buy dogs from the mall- but I was just looking about last week and made the mistake of playing with this very cute American bulldog.
I know I can't have him, (plus, he's $2k) but my heart is breaking.
I can't stop thinking about that little scamp..
everyone- tell me it would be mean for me to have 2 15+ pound cats and an American Bulldog in a 900 square foot apartment!!!

Re: I am in love with Kevin and I am so sad
I read this about American Bulldog, so I don't think it'd be necessarily cruel to have one in an apartment. We have a Lab in our apartment, and he's a big heap of energy.
'The American Bulldog will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard.'
This is what we had read about Mastiffs also, but we'll wait to get one for another year.

I say go get him. youll be glad you did!
Also just because they want 2K doesnt mean that you have to give them that.. chew them down a little.

Oh no, you are NOT helping Violet
the problem is that I'm in graduate school Monday and Wednesday nights and don't get home 'til 9.45! I would feel bad for the guy being in the crate until he is house broken... plus I've read that they need a LOT of attention and need to go to obedience school... but this puppy is SO CUTE!

How many hours total would you have to leave him alone for those days that you go to school?
If you want him where you could work it out, you should go get him. It's frowned down upon to get dogs at pet stores which is where my FH got our dog, but I didn't know that until he surprised me with him. But I fell in love with him and was happy with him and could never asked for him to be taken back. It's not that you want this specific breed, you just want that specific dog. What's wrong with that?

FH and I went to pet store a couple months ago for something, and we stopped and saw a yellow lab puppy like the one we have now and took him out to play with him. We had to tell ourselves NO we can't get him. We had to be realistic. We can get more dogs when we get a house in the future.

Re: I am in love with Kevin and I am so sad
ON Mondays the both of us don't get home until 9.45- I leave at 7.30 am- that's over 12 hours (until he's able to go crate free).. could he even 'hold it' that long? I would have to take him on at least 1 mile walks 2 times a day- they are a very athletic bread- all muscle- and need to get a lot of excercise- I've also heard they want to be where you are all the time...
I REALLLLY want him SO bad.. my heart is breaking.. of course, I dont' know if my landlord would let me have him either
what type of dogs do you guys have?

I have an Akita mixed breed that I got a north shore animal league. and i have a toy poodle.
i love them both so much... theres nothing like a dog..
you wouldnt be able to go 12 hours with out going home to let the dog out at least once.
You definatly need to talk to your landlord first.

Re: I am in love with Kevin and I am so sad
it isn't his fault the is in a mall petstore he just wants a home
$2K is nuts and totally unfair. I cry at the poor cats who need homes in my local pet store. They are NOT selling them. They are from a local shelter and the pet store kepts them to try and place. I always feel so bad. They just want a mommy to love them
what can your FH reallydo anyway make you clean your room, do the laundry, go food shopping, cook dinner? We wives already do all the 'punishment' work

Yeah, that wouldn't be good if he would be alone for 12 hours. He wouldn't be able to hold it for that long, especially because puppies can't hold it as much as they could if they were adults. If that's only on one or two days, is there someone that could come by and let him out and play with him for a little?

Re: I am in love with Kevin and I am so sad
maybe I can hire a dog walker for Mondays?
but I DO need to talk to my landlord.
we are in 10k worth of debt- I have NO business buying a dog for 2k!
but I don't feel bad for buying a dog b/c I've rescued 2 cats from shelters (I adopted them older- I felt bad b/c no one wanted the poor things- and it's weird b/c htey are GREAT cats)...
all I know is, if I buy Kevin my cats will be annoyed BIG TIME..
Maca will get FAT TAIL...
Oh No- I just realized that I can't name him Kevin b/c that's my step sister's boyfriends name...
hmmm- how about Bruce?

Don't do it!! My co-worker got a puppy a few months ago and cuz of school and work she can't housebreak her. They sent her to an aunt's in Pennsylvania for a couple of months to be housebroken. It's a lot of work, especially with school and work, wait till you have the time. The space means nothing, the time is more important. Sorry, I am just crazy about spending lots of time with animals!

Re: I am in love with Kevin and I am so sad
Here is a listing of American Bulldogs that need homes from shelters American Bulldog
Puppy mills do not give the dames any rest...keep their dogs in cages all the time...in the cold...stud out their males too many times...they do not take care to protect the breed...they do not evaluate the health and temperament of each mating...they just mate to mate...
they all come from puppy mills...and if the dog is not show quality (if he is in a pe store he is not) $2K is highway robbery!!!
I'm not too familiar with the American Bulldog...but I know that Shelzyp got an Olde Englishe Bulldogge from a very reputable breeder on LI - they were bred to be more like the English Bulldog of 100 years ago -- no health problems...and this breeder works off the original lines...
get a dog...but NEVER get from a pet store...either research breeders or if you don't care about the breed...go to a shelter...

Re: I am in love with Kevin and I am so sad
But Erica- what about the dogs and cats in the pet shops? should they just die alone and homeless or kept in that tiny crate because we do not agree with pet shop practices? I am NOT a fan of pet shops BUT the pets didn't do anything wrong. Poor things
