Re: i am learning to knit...
When I was little my great grandmother used to knit and crochet me the best sweaters, hats and scarves. She taught me how to do all of it, but when she went into the nursing home and wasnt doing it anymore I stopped too. It just lost its fun.
I havent picked up a knitting needled or crotchet needle in a long time.
I love though, its definatly relaxing

Knit vs. Crochet (long)
Both are a method of making new stitches, or rows, above the previous row, to create the fabric. Knitting uses 2 needles (or 4 for circular knitting, ie: sock knitting). Crochet uses a single tool with a hook on the end.
If you look at basic knit fabric you'll see how one 'loop' is pulled up through the same type of loop below. You can vary the look by making variations on a few basic stitches - the knit stitch and purl stitch. That's how you get knitted lace, Cable knits, and the various patterns you see in the knitted fabric - think of Irish knit cable sweaters. The possibilities are endless.
Crochet uses various wrapping and looping techniques to create each stitch. These days you see it used most often for Afgahns, though you can use it for garments too. I was going to say it tends to be a heavier fabric, until I remembered that you can find fine crocheted lace at just about any antique shop or flea market.
Lisa - don't feel like a geek for wanting to try knitting - wait until you've become obsessed like me and you tell your friends you're going away for a 4 day Knitting seminar with classes on various techniques, or you take a 10 week course in knitwear pattern design - that's when you'll get the really wierd looks. And I started doing that about 10 years ago when knitting wasn't becoming trendy like it has over the past few years!

Re: i am learning to knit...
knitting is with 2 needles. crocheting is with 1 hook.. I like crocheting cause i found it easier to hold then holding 2 needles and working the yarn..
