Can anyone recommend some areas that are nice, but not too expensive? (not terribly far out, I may still be working in the city). I am pretty familiar with Nassau but most areas are waaaay out of my price range. Just looking for some feedback, experiences, etc..... We probably won't be looking for another year. Just looking for some places to start the research.
TIA!!

Well, how far is too far? Is an excellent SD important to you? What kind of price range are you looking for? I'm kind of in the same predicement. we can't afford a/t decent in Nassau but we work in GC and NHP so we can't go too far east. If you need to be near the train then you could try Babylon or Ronkonkoma.

My brother and his wife live in Lindenhurst. It seems to be a nice area and they really like it. Plus, it seems affordable- my DH and I were thinking about it, but since he commutes to Westchester and I work in the Bronx, we ruled it out. We just don't want to look for new jobs too.
Edit: also, it's considered western Suffolk- it's just over the border from Nassau.

As of now, I would rather not be too far out east (only because of my job in the city). If it wasn't for that I do not mind being far out. I am very flexible and just open to suggestions.

What about Smithtown? It may be a little far to go into the city though but people do the commute from even further east.
I always see a bunch of listings in Huntington- you just have to be careful where in Hunt. though. The best thing to do is to drive around the area and then let the realtor find the houses for you in the areas you like.

If you really don't mind being east I love Sound Beach, Mt. Sinai, Rocky Point and Miller Place They're too far for us since we drive to work but I'd love to live in those areas! You can also try Holbrook or Holtsville (they're nice areas and affordable-imo). I also like Hauppauge, Smithtown, E. Northport, Northport, St. James (a bit more expensive).

We're in Northport and I wortk in NYC. I take the Northport train in to Hunters Point Avenue (I try to avoid Penn) and then take the 7 train in to Grand Central Station. I'm on the train at 7:34 and walk in to my office at 8:50-9:00am. It's really not bad at all. It's a nice express train. Same thing coming home, express train from HP right to Northport.
Northport is right on the water and a beautiful little town. The village itself is a little expensive but the surrounding areas as well as East Northport, Huntington, Centerport are really nice too.

Same here ... when I worked in the city, I really couldn't complain about the commute (I worked in the Met Life building so the train to Hunterspoint to the 7 was excellent) - except I was on the 6:47AM!

You can't beat the HP station and the 7 train! I love it!! It saves SO much time on my commute - about 45 minutes each way!
