The top wisdom teeth didn't hurt at all! Definitely go to an oral surgeon, not your regular dentist--surgeons do them every day. The bottoms hurt for a while, I won't lie, but I ate a lot of ice cream...Good luck!

Re: I am petrified of the dentist and now...
it was bad...i had 7 numbing shots before i would get the big shot. besides that it took literally 2 billy joel songs on the muzak. i closed my eyes and hummed new york state of mind and i go to extremes and it was done. the pain lasted 3 days.....waaaaiiit, was i supposed to be encouraging you to go or tellin you like it is??
it will be fabulous...in case i was supposed to be encouraging you. i am the biggest woos when it comes to blood and needles and it really did not suck so bad.

Goto an Oral Sugeon and not the dentist - the oral surgeon will be able to put you out halfway and you wont even know that it has been done...
They are experts at it - the whole process by the time the MD comes in the door is maybe 5 minutes...
I remember they gave me the drugs, I put my head back, I saw a hand go for my mouth, and 30 seconds later they told me I was done - I was clueless.
Be careful not to get dry socket!!! That is where most of the pain will come from if you have pain at all.
I also read that you shouldnt get it done near AF becuase it will increase the chances you get a dry socket.
Good Luck!

I had all four done at once b/c I knew if I did 2 at a time, I would never go back for the second 2. I asked to be knocked out for it, and I don't remember anything. It seemed to be over in seconds. The recovery wasn't much fun. I remember my lips and jaw being numb and I kept drooling! I stayed on drugs for a few days, and then all was well.

My dentist referred me to an oral surgeon. I have 1 one top and 1 on the bottom that have to come out. I'm SO not happy about it.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time. It wasn't that bad. I went to the Bronx Zoo the next day. I was kind of kooky on vicodin though.

i had all four pulled, but only two at at time. mine were impacted which makes a huge difference. i was completely knocked out so naturally i did not feel a thing as it was happening. after the first two teeth, i was in bed for like three days, but that was totally my fault as i was overmedicating myself with vicodins!!! the second two came out a year later (again i was fully knocked out) and this time i did not overmedicate myself. it wasn't too bad and i lost a couple of pounds b/c i couldn't eat solids for a few days.

I just had one pulled and had one pulled 2 years ago. This time seemed worse...I have a hole in my gum that isn't closing!

I had all four pulled 2 at a time. The first time I wasn't knocked out and had a horrible experience. It took me 2 years to work up the courage to get the other 2 out. By then one of them was impacted. I went to an oral surgeon recommended by a friend and this time I asked to be knocked out which was the best decision ever. Never felt a thing, I took pain medication maybe once afterwards.

I had a 'buried' wisdom tooth pulled over the summer- just a little corner was sticking out above my top teeth. I was petrified but it really wasn't that bad. I also had to be awake for the whole thing because I'd driven myself there expecting only a consultation. It was ok, though, and I got tylenol with codeine after. Ahh, codeine. It did the trick.
You'll be fine!

Dry socket is easy to prevent- just don't drink from a straw while you're healing, and smoking is bad too. When a tooth is pulled, a clot will form over the extraction site, like a scab, but the sucking you do will loosen the clot, which will cause dry socket.
I assume AF is Aunt Flo, though a dentist could better answer that part, I guess, because I don't get the connection.

Yes - AF= Aunt Flo. I read it in a woman's magazine (while sitting in the dentist's office, how appropriate) that if you have it done while you have AF there is more likelyhood that you will develop dry socket.
I asked the dentist about it, he said he read the same thing.
