So when I was doing a web search for a band, I went to a band website (which I will not name, but you can FM me if you want). Not 20 minutes later, I receive a phone call FROM THAT BAND! They said that I had requested some information (not true) and that I had recently visited their webste (true) and that I wanted to go see them live (so not true!) The man had the audacity to say that I had spoken to him. Of course I lied and told him that 'I' wasnt home.
So somehow by visiting the website, he accessed my phone number??!!
I'm just a little bit angry right now. I had no idea that when I logged on to website that they can get my number.

is it possible to get that info from someone's ip address? i think you can track location with that but i'm not sure how specific it is. anyway, that is really annoying, i'm sorry.

By any chance were you signed onto yahoo. Once I was trying to order cookies or something like that and two day s later I got all these cookies/balloons/ candy catalogs. It may have been a coincidence but it was weird and it happened right after yahoo changed its privacy policy.

I worked in the internet industry before going back to grad school last year and I can promise you that there is no possible way he got your phone number from just visiting the site. Cookies can track your movements on the web but it is not possible for them to release personal information. It still sounds scary, though. But as a former web geek I can promise you that its not as big brother as it seems.

isn't it funny?? i someitmes let ym ans machine pick up now or i answer and say i am not home...i do not need half these people anymore.....and they are all still calling claiming to have met me at the bridal expo i attended 'last week' - too bad i usually haven't gone to one in that last week they refer too!!! aagh!

well, the man called again. mentioned loggin on to his website, but so many of you have fm'ed me that it is impossible to get personal info off the web, that i guess it really was a matter of coincidence. maybe my fh filled out something and didn't tell me?
anyhoo, back to my search for a band!

That is sooooo annoying! I have had several vendors continue to call me after I had already booked all of them. I am sorry to hear that you were being harassed. Could you please FM me the name? I just hope it isn't my band!

They can be reported. That's illegal. FH is a computer tech and he said unless it says on their site that they have permission to do this, it is illiegal. Find out who hosts the site, and report them to the webmaster. Even contact BBB.
