I am so miserable.....

I am so miserable.....

I don't know how some of you do it. My fiance and I work like 70 hour weeks, have great jobs, but between paying for the wedding, loans, debt, and now looking for an apartment, I don't know where we are going to live and how we are going to pay for it.
Apartments in NYC, BRKLN and Queens are like 2800 a month. We have even discussed moving back to LI and renting an apt, but those are 2000 a month plus the 400 dollars commuting money.
Buying based on my research, is OUT OF THE QUESTION.

I just feel like this should be a great time, buying furniture, starting our lives together. Maybe I am being a baby and need to grow up, but it kills me that we are getting married in 8 weeks and we don't have 'our home' yet.

It's like a game. House vs. Wedding. We used our 'cash' for the House and the 'plastic' for the Wedding (most of it anyway). Living off of 0% cards until the big day!

Nancy - we went through the same thing....we ended up finding an apartment in Brooklyn at a great price, but unfortunately it required us to 'lower our standards.' We're living in Dyker Heights and would've preferred to live in Park Slope - but it's just too expensive.

Let me know if you want me to look into any apt's in Bklyn for you....I constantly come across them.

We have a 2-bedroom apartment in Astoria and its $1500 a month, where are you looking at aparments?
I totally know how you f eel though, I had a post on this the other day!
There are options out there, you just have to look in the right places, and be willing to make some sacrafices.

I think Dyker Heights is nice, one of my friends grew up there and lives there

I hear that!

I didn't think it was posible to save the money and that we would never have the cash. Luckily I got an offer from my cc to get a cash advance for 0% until March 2007. by then we'll have the money. I know people say don't go into debt for the wedding, but it's so hard to save all that cash in such a short amount of time. Look for 0% interest credit cards to help you out until after the wedding and then pay them off in a year. If you have good credit and know how to manage your $$ it shouldn't be a problem. Just don't charge more than you could pay off in a year (extra payment each month).

I loved Dyker Heights. DH lived there when we first met and we talk about going back there a lot.

There is also Staten Island...I know that people think it is really the boonies, but it isn't that bad. We pay $1900 a month for a 3 bedroom house with a backyard and a garage. It is HUGE.

Plus the commute isn't as pricey as the LIRR. I take an express bus to midtown, it takes an hour max and costs $41 per week.

Where in Queens are you looking to live that costs $2800 a month and where on Long Island are you looking that an apartment is $2000? Also, I live On Eastern Long island and my train is $267 a month. If you lived in Nassau it would be way less.
You could get a beautiful two bedroom is Forest Hills, Queens for $1600.
Keep looking..you will find something. I know it's expensive but I don't think it's as bad as you think it is.

Queens apartments shouldn't be that expensive. I live in Forest Hills for half of that. Take a look at craigslist. There are more affordable options in Forest Hills and Kew Gardens, and both are really close to public transportation if you need it.

If I told you how much my mortgage is for my house in NC, you would

that is why we got out of long island, there was no way I would be renting my whole life....

I didn't mean to say Dyker Heights is 'lower' or not better - LOL. I meant to say, that we would love to live in Manhattan, Bklyn Heights or Park Slope, but the prices there are skyrocket high....so we 'lowered' (as in minimizing our demands) and chose to look outside those three/four areas we had our heart set on.

Frickin' love Dyker/Beonsonhurst/Bay Ridge - born and raised there....

don't feel bad - FH and I are busting our behinds every day but even then we won't be able to afford a house right away

we are going to live with my parents for a few years - but it *****, i mean they are nice enough to do over my upstairs - but basically . . . to tell the 100% truth. . .. we are going to be living in an attic! seriously. . .my parents are putting a full bath up there and fixing up a little kitchen area but when you get down to it - its an attic

BUT no worries - that is the sacrifice we are willing to make and hopefully it works out in the end!

the point of all this is - you are not alone at all- almost everyone is going through this! just dont give up it will eventually work out!

Re: I am so miserable.....

I hear you - this is a really stressful time with everything that's going on! Sending your way.

I live in Manhattan (Hudson Heights - west of Broadway b/t 181st and 192nd streets). It's a really nice neighborhood and the rent isn't bad for Manhattan - apartments are between $1200 and $1600 for one bedrooms. The 'A' line runs there and it's a 20 minute ride to midtown. I found my apartment on Craig's List.

Also, one bedroom apts in Forest Hills go for about the same rent.

Good Luck - it'll work out!!!!
