Re: I am so miserable.....

check out all the forest hills ladies!

FH is great, not too expensive, great area and 20 min. subway into midtown.

i have a co-op in FH and my mortgage and maint comes to less that $2K, so it's def doable. I know renting is around $1,500. check out some places, you'll love it there.

honestly, i think the majority of people our age are in the same dilemma! its really sad, no matter how great both jobs are, it still does not seem like enough. best of luck with everything and know that you are not alone, we are in the same boat, as are the majority of our friends!

Re: I am so miserable.....

I hear you...

We lucked out with our apartment 2 yrs ago..

We pay $1320/mth + the utilities and cable...

We are close to $2000.00

but we are on the 1st floor of a house and have a 2 1/2 bed room, lr, dr. eik, fb, plus the basement and backyard and we have a washer and dryer.

We looked for a while til we found this one...

My point is keep your head up and get the Sunday paper everyweek... that is what we did.

I know someone who has a 1 bedroom l/r; big eik, f/b. all in. new appliances and new windows in queens(bellerose) 1 mi from the LIRR for rent. $ 1200 all in.

If you want her number FM me

Nancy - we went through the same thing....we ended up finding an apartment in Brooklyn at a great price, but unfortunately it required us to 'lower our standards.' We're living in Dyker Heights and would've preferred to live in Park Slope - but it's just too expensive.

Let me know if you want me to look into any apt's in Bklyn for you....I constantly come across them.

I think Dyker Heights is nice, one of my friends grew up there and lives there

I loved Dyker Heights. DH lived there when we first met and we talk about going back there a lot.

There is also Staten Island...I know that people think it is really the boonies, but it isn't that bad. We pay $1900 a month for a 3 bedroom house with a backyard and a garage. It is HUGE.

Plus the commute isn't as pricey as the LIRR. I take an express bus to midtown, it takes an hour max and costs $41 per week.

I didn't mean to say Dyker Heights is 'lower' or not better - LOL. I meant to say, that we would love to live in Manhattan, Bklyn Heights or Park Slope, but the prices there are skyrocket high....so we 'lowered' (as in minimizing our demands) and chose to look outside those three/four areas we had our heart set on.

Frickin' love Dyker/Beonsonhurst/Bay Ridge - born and raised there....

I didn't take it that way

I miss living over there. And I miss all of the good pizza and other restaurants! DH and I dated while he lived there, so we have good memories

Thanks everyone!!!!
I am definately going to look in these areas. It makes me feel so much better knowing I am not alone.

Sorry if my vent sounded snobby or anything. I always wanted to live in a big apartment in NYC but if it means sacrifing SOOOOOOOOOO many other great things--its just not worth it.

We are in NHP - so close to Queens and walking distance fromt he LIRR. We have three bedrooms (rent) and we pay nowhere near 2000. Unfortunately, you have to be in the right place at the right time. You need to be diligent in your search but it can be done. Many couples make the sacrifice and rent when they first start out. Not everyone can buy right away and there is no shame in it. Shoot, my parents rented when they first got married 50 years ago. It wasnt until 6 years later that they bought - 5 bedrooms, Roslyn Heights, excellent schools - not too shabby and certainly worth waiting for. Don't be hard on yourself.

Try Forest Hills. It's a great area and the prices, while expensive, are nowhere near what you mentioned.

I don't know how some of you do it. My fiance and I work like 70 hour weeks, have great jobs, but between paying for the wedding, loans, debt, and now looking for an apartment, I don't know where we are going to live and how we are going to pay for it.
Apartments in NYC, BRKLN and Queens are like 2800 a month. We have even discussed moving back to LI and renting an apt, but those are 2000 a month plus the 400 dollars commuting money.
Buying based on my research, is OUT OF THE QUESTION.

I just feel like this should be a great time, buying furniture, starting our lives together. Maybe I am being a baby and need to grow up, but it kills me that we are getting married in 8 weeks and we don't have 'our home' yet.

OMG I am right there with you!! Except we put a deposit on an apartment which we are moving into on September 1 and still don't know how we will pay each month. :(

I just got my student loan consolidation in and it totals $97,000.00 and I still CAN'T find a teaching job.

I know it is all so discouraging but try to keep your head up. After the wedding your financial situation may improve. I know we are hoping ours does.

I really do not understand how young couples are surviving in New York anymore, but I can't leave my family. :(

I completely hear you. DH is having a hard time budging from the apt we have, but the deal we have is incredible compared to what we would get if we moved. We're paying $1500 for a 2BR, with gas, electric, internet, cable, washer/dryer, use of driveway, pool & jacuzzi included.

We plan on going out of state when we buy a house unless we get lucky & find something affordable close by. We don't want to rent the rest of our lives. My parents are still renting and I don't know why.
