I am so sad...

Original post by Bride Needs Advice

Last weekend, FH decided to tell me that he's been bothered by something I've said to him on several occasions but the last one bothered him the most and he's really hurt.. (he's been holding it in for about a month now).

He now tells me that he doesn't know if he can go through with the wedding and that we should postpone. He doesn't want to go for counseling and we've talked about this for hours on end this week. When he told me that he wanted to postpone the wedding... I told him no way. Either you know you want to marry me or you don't. Do you ladies agree?

I just feel that we can work through this but time is of the essence since we are getting married relatively soon. We've been together for 4 years and have known each other forever.. Would you postpone? I don't know what to do???

We have talked about this for 2 days, both very lengthy talks but it just feels like we keep going in circles. I keep apologizing and he keeps saying that he doesn't know if he could get past this.

I am hiding my identity because I don't want people to know who I am just yet..

I was in a similar situation many years ago. I was engaged...and the ex decided that something was not right and wanted to postpone (he wasn't ready). I said no...either now or never. So...we broke up. I lost thousands of $$$$ due to canceling contracts....and at the time, it was so hard...it took me a long time to get over it. Looking back...it was the best thing that ever happened to me. He was too immature at the time...and we would have been miserable. I have now found my true love.

That being said...perhaps he is threatened by your financial success? Alot of men cannot handle women who make more/contribute more financially....they feel like they should be the providers. You need to seriouslly figure out if you want to marry this man, now or in the future, if he does not want to work things out.

What is his reason for postponing....just for more time? To save more money? If he doesn't want to go to counseling...to help solve the issue, what is the extra time for?

Good luck....please FM if you need to talk.

Thanks luvsun... the thing is that this is my 2nd engagement and things were totally different with this man. I love him so much and he loves me so I just can't understand why now, when it's so close to the wedding he wants to postpone over something that can be worked out but I guess I can't do anything to change his mind and I don't want to. I want him to come to me when he's ready to say that I love you... we can work through this or no, I just can't ever marry you.

I don't know what the extra time is for exactly... I spoke to him before and I asked how long he thinks he would need.... 6 months, 1 year, 2 years? He said he doesn't know! Is that fair for me to sit around and wait??? I don't think it is. I am not in my 20's where I can sit around and wait for him to make up his mind whether he wants to spend his life with me.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts and advice. Thanks for the words of comfort during this emotionally draining time.

This sounds like a problem that was posted the other day. I won't say what, in case it is, but maybe not.

You need to talk about why the comment hurt him so much that he isn't willing to marry you. Maybe he thinks it's bothered you the whole time, or does he think you changed as a person because of this?

I agree, don't get married under utlimatium. Start off on the wrong foot, things can only get worse.

I know what you are talking about... i remember reading it....

i agree with you 100%

Good luck with this bride that needs advice
i am thinking about you
things will work out for the best in the end!

For me, it would be counseling or no marriage. Your problems aren't going to go away once you get married, nor will they go away on their own.

It sounds like he wants you to break up with him.

What is the DEAL? all these hidden meanings, anyway, it seems like there are a lot of Other Issues that you don't want to talk about, basically I think only you and your partner can decide what is best for you both. If you can't communicate and work together to resolve your issues, then maybe thats a sign to Not get Married. Don't let the 'Wedding' get in the way of how you feel about this relationship and each others feelings, you can't be selfish and worry about the whole plans for the wedding - you need to Stop it all and focus on these hurt feelings and things that your partner can 't seem to get past, thats whats important right now. He's letting you know now, there are still issues that he thinks are not going to make things work for you guys - Listen to what he's saying. I don't know what will be the end result but it sure sounds like this wedding isn't going to happen and giving someone an ultimatum is not a good way to go into a marriage, that person will always resent that.

Being a therapist, I often notice that men are too cowardly to tell a woman that they want to end their relationship. They seem to hope that the woman will end it for him. Do you think that is what is going on?

This could be it. Whatever you do, do NOT give him an ultimatum (how would you feel if you got one???) I know this wedding is what you want, but take a step back and try to be objective. Is this the best way to start off the rest of your life? If this issue is not resolved, it will just get worse. Why is he not willing to go to counseling? Does he have any other ideas on how to get past this? If I were you, I would postpone the wedding and try to get him to counseling. If he won't go, find out why. And ask him the difficult question - does he want out of the relationship? You might not like the answer you hear, but sometimes people don't want to admit something unless they are forced to. Whatever you decide to do (and only you can decide what is right for you) I wish you the best of luck and happiness for your future.

I am so sorry. not know the whole story, I have to agree with everyone else. If you can't talk about it, you can't fix it. If this is something you really believe time will heal, then you can postpone. If you don't, then end it. You deserve someone who is sure about you. Whatever happens, it is for the best.
