So I was young and stupid at one point (imagine that ) and rang up a crap load of credit. Between that and student loans, I can't seem to get on top. I can't consolidate my student loans. Anyone have a debt consolidation program they can recommend? Or anything else you've used that will help me get on top of all of this???Thanks girls!

Believe me... I was in the same boat and Still there now. FH has really been helping me out. I opened a new CC that has 0% interest for a little over a year and put all my debt into that. Been paying a couple of hundred every paycheck to pay it off. It's working for me.... my CC debt is under $10,000 now and I started with close to $18,000 in debt over a year ago.

I did Care One Credit Counseling. It really helped me stay on top of things. You have to pay them a fee every month, but they work it into your payment and they will disperse everything to your credit cards. I am now debt free!!! (Still can't get an AMEX though ) Next, I have to get FH cleared of debt so we can buy a house someday....

ETA: I was about $4,000 in debt (that's after my parents paid $3000 for me a few years back, which I still owe them- I couldn't keep up w/ sky high interest rates and I would open a bill and toss it aside only to totally forget about it..I'm REALLY absent-minded...)

Try oprah's website. She had this debt program where you make lists of all creditors with interest rate and amts owed and it gives you a plan to start paying them off and ideas on ways to get your creditors to work with you. The same thing a debt counselor would do but you do it yourself.

Re: I could use some help ladies
I consolidated some of my debt with an incredibly low personal line of credit. Citibank offered it to me to use anyway I want (buy stuff, pay for a big expense, consolidate, etc...) which is what I did. So this way, I can pay more and not be saddled with so high of an interest rate. It's tough, but if you chip away at it you can do it.

I used to work for the Federal Trade Commission, and there are a lot of sketchy debt counseling services out there (not to say the ones LIW girls have used are bad, don't worry!). There is a bunch of info on the FTC website that has tips for how to pick a good credit counselor if you go that route, or things to do on your own to get out of debt. Here is a link .
