Normally I say 'it's the thought that counts' - and would chalk it up to the fact that the person doesn't have any money to give. But the fact that they gave singles seems to point to the idea that they were being a smart ***.

If I knew the couple and I knew they were super poor - I would have just let it go and realized that they gave what they could.

IF - however - I happened to know that they were just being cheap (ie - they drive around in a Bentley and go out to dinner at Nobu every night) - I would be tempted to send back the five dollars in the thank you note and say 'We really do appreciate the thought, but we feel terrible taking your money since it is evident that you need it more than we do.'

I got small presents and no presents from people. My nephew actually gave me $25 from him, his girlfriend and their son. But ... he is in school full time and has a crappy job. She just has a crappy job so I know they don't have the money. I felt bad taking their $25 because it really was more than they could afford... so I wound up taking them out to supper and buying their son a couple of outfits the following week. I figured that would take some of the money pressure off!

My sis just told me that when her BF's mom remarried one of their guest gave them a card with $5...in singles! What the heck is wrong with people!!!

That doesn't surprise me. At my BFF wedding I believe she received 2 or 3 envelopes with $20 in it. I also beleive that thhis was just not for a couple but 1 of them may have been for a family.

lmaaaaaaaooooooooooo I've NEVER heard of that one!!!!!!!!!!! That is just a slap in the face! Better to give me NOTHING than 5 efin dollars!!!!!
