That looks like a shed.

Im going with my mother to go look at a house next monday for my parents. Right now they live in Lynbrook and they have a 12 room house. They want to downsize because all of their children are out of the house, except for me. I rent out the second floor.

The house we are going to look at on monday, is in oceanside....not sure what kind of house, or where exactly it is located, but I do know it has a 2 car garage, which is something my dad wanted. 2 bedrooms upstairs, 1 bedroom downstairs, 2 full baths, and a finished basement. I think the asking price is in the low $400,000's.

My parents wont buy this house but they keep torturing themselves looking at houses.

I'll let you know what happens.

What town is that in?

it may be a shack...but the land is probably worth the majority of that price...

If its a good location...that could be a steal!!!

I agree Erica - isn't Northern NJ really desirable? For that price, you can buy the land and knock down the house....rebuild a modest beautiful house

dont mean to flame anyone but people who write 'they want THIS MUCH for THIS house??' usually haven't been in the market long enough to realize what the value of land is. it's all about the location and land!!!
when they get into the SERIOUS buying mode and are out there seeing houses and property, it is only THEN that they realize how expensive everything really is! JMO!

You can not buy a ONE BEDROOM Studio for $159K so that looks like a pretty reasonable price for all that space an a cute little house. I know my sense of value is warped from living here to too long

I agree living in NY has skewed our perception of affordability. Before I was in the market I thought houses were overpriced as well. But now that all the houses have been reassessed (at least on LI) the property value really can't drop too much since people are even being taxed differently to compensate for the increased market value.

Who knows that red house might be a steal.

How much land is that cottage on? Northern Jersey is beautiful, I agree it can absolutely be expanded or even torn down.
For another $150,000 you could build a beautiful house to your liking, and have someplace to sleep in the meantime.

still looks like a shack to me! LOL But I do agree, you could buy and build on the land.

It's somewhere near the Rockaway / Lake Hopatcong area - Sage, you grew up near there, right? That part of northern NJ can be great.

My initial reaction was laughter....I just think the prices for homes in the tri-state area is insane for a variety of reasons that I won't go into.

you are right, I haven't been in the market long at all....but I have traveled to many parts of the US where you can get a huge house and land for $150k and the quality of living is much better. So stuff like this amuses me.

Ladies- if this is buy Lake Hapatacong (I can't spell it) that's pretty far. I would say a *tad* too far to commute into the city.. it's faster to drive to the Poconos from there than into NYC...

Maybe I would buy the land and build- BUT WHERE WOULD YOU WORK?????

I refuse to buy- I just straight out refuse because...

1) I will not buy land on an Island where it takes 25 minutes just to go the supermarket becase there is traffic from sunrise to sunset... no way- it's just going to get worse.

2) I will not buy an affordable house all the way out east and then waste at LEAST 3 hours a day on the train.. that's 780 hours a year... roughly 13 days per annum of commutation- I don't even get THAT MANY VACATION DAYS!!!!

3) I will not buy land in NJ where I can't even make a left turn- W T F- I have to go 5 miles out of my way- pass my destination- to turn around and come back- PLEASE... it infuriates me every time!

I think I've finally decided that either I have to live in the city or live on a farm... after this past Thanksgiving I realized the Suburban life isn't doing it for me...

But kudus to you ladies who scrimp & save & make your dreams happen!

Don't worry MrsTC- our time will come

Lake Hopatcong is far.....but not too far to commute to the city. I know this b/c I grew up in Sparta NJ (very close to Hopatcong and Rockaway), and both my parents worked in the city.

Was it a long commute? sure....but was it absolutely gorgeous up there and did I love where I grew up? YES!!!!

that being said, I agree with you Sassy75 on all other counts....

I am one of those annoying people that breaks out a calculator at all times- which is scary b/c I'm so not a math person.. but this is how I rationalize things.

Yesterday the girl at Cohen Optical was trying to sell me an 'insurance' plan and I broke out the calculator- you should have seen her face! priceless

Sage- don't get me wrong, i'd love to live out there- but Ideally I wouldn't want to do the schlep into the city from there...

unless I could do it part time & work from home the other times or work somewhere in NJ...

Ideally I just want to own my own store somewhere.

OMG...I thought only my husband and I HATED the 'JUG HANDLE' things in NJ!! They ar so stupid and to me...do not help traffic!!

Sassyz75 Posted:

Re: I couldn't find the original post..but here's another - they want HOW MUCH for this??

I really don't understand why it's any safer than having a left turn lane.. and the jug handles always back up and the lights are never long enough.. I despise them...

You have summed up every frustration my husband and I have faced in the last 2 years.

This is my favorite:

2) I will not buy an affordable house all the way out east and then waste at LEAST 3 hours a day on the train.. that's 780 hours a year... roughly 13 days per annum of commutation- I don't even get THAT MANY VACATION DAYS!!!!

Don't forget, after you buy that 'affordable house', you have to pay nearly $300 EACH to commute on that 3 hour a day train ride. So add 600 bucks to your mortgage every month. And that's not including the metro card transfer! It's highway robbery!!!
