Mom coming back after 8 years of being gone with little contact (and she was welcomed back pretty easily). If she's so broken up about the loss of one child, why would she turn her back on the other two?
And the icicle killer? I was fine with not having a nice neat 'we caught him' ending, but that was too hollywood for me. Didn't seem realistic at all. Just before he kills another, he gets killed by an icicle? I think it would have been better if his next victim got the best of him.

Re: I didn't like the ending
Not sure how I felt about the ending to be perfectly honest. I remember thinking 'what an ending', and then upon reflection beginning to realize that I was not that crazy about it. It was a lot of time invested in such a supernatural plot-line to accept such a quick tie up at the end that was almost comical in a way.

Ugh - I wish I could get into this more, but I'm at work! Anyway, I want to quickly add that I agree 100%! I thought the ending $ucked. The icicle was too lame for me, especially after such a powerful storyline. I figured he wouldn't get caught, but there could have been a better ending.

In a way I like the ending because it wasn't what we all expected or wanted. It was exactly the opposite.

I was not happy with the ending either. There was so much detail in the book that you were tied up in the story all along. Then at the end, they quickly covered a variety of events that you did not feel connected anymore and then it just ended. I lost the feeling I had during the length of the story. All in all though I really liked the book.

I disagree Jenn. I think we wanted to see him caught or killed, and we got one of those. I just hated the way it happened. Too neat after such a powerful story.

I too wanted him to be caught. Did anyone catch how the icicle death came full circle in the book.

Re: I didn't like the ending
I agree, the ending was really disappointing. The icicle bit made me feel cheated as a reader. The rest of the book brought up many intriguing questions and then the ending was so flat and uninspired.

Re: I didn't like the ending
LOVE the ending. I think that the family needed sooo much healing and sometimes that includes forgiveness. No one knows how they would react in this situation. Mothers are just people, and they make mistakes too. I think that after a while, people begin to heal, and their hearts accept the mistakes others made during the crisis.

Just curious -- Did Susie kill him, or was it just chance? After all it was her idea of the perfect murder.

It was fate- not really chance- I believe. More about what comes around, goes around. IMO

Re: I didn't like the ending
I think the ending was supposed to be 'ironic' in some sense. I wasn't overly thrilled with it either - it seemed too convienent for me.
my feelings about the ending...but without the smile...

Re: I didn't like the ending
I didnt like the ending either. I found myself turning the pages of the entire story waiting for her body to be discovered or for someone to get the best of 'him'. Then when it ended the way it did, I was very dissapointed.
Its actually funny because while I was in the middle of it my 15 year old brother came over and picked up the book and said..what would you do if i read you the last page right now. I freaked out! I was like omg dont you even think about it. When I finished the book I thought to myself, it wouldnt have mattered anyway. He wouldnt have been giving anything away at all!

Re: I didn't like the ending
Speaking from someone whose mother 'abandoned' her (for lack of a better word) I dont believe ANY normal person would accept that mother back with such open arms. Its like the little brother went from hatred to love in about a milisecond. As the reader of the book we can empathsize with the mothers feelings but why would a young child be able to do that? Or how does the father ALLOW this women back into their life after she has done so much damage? That part was all just a little too Norman Rockwell for me.
I liked the icsicle death...yes a little too ironic/full circle to be realistic but I think that was the point. This book wasnt realistic in much of its story.

Re: I didn't like the ending
I agree 100% about the mother being welcomed back. It was too quick and too complete for my liking.
As for the end,the thing that bothered me the most was the swiftness of his death. I really would have liked to see him suffer more, as he made Susie suffer before he killed her. (Does this show my vengeful side?? )

I did like that it ended in a different way than expected but like others, felt it was too 'neat.'

Re: I didn't like the ending
I was disappointed a bit my self about the ending. I truly thought that he would go after Lindsey and she would either hurt him or kill, or the police would show up and arrest him
