I don't know what to do

I don't know what to do

Our HM is supposed to be in St. Lucia, but hurricane went through there on Sunday and according to the travel agent the infrastructure in the south of the island (where the airport is) is very badly damaged, with the majority of the roads totally impassable. The north of the island (where is the resort is) is basically ok, just some minor damage. Right now the airport is closed with no definite date to re-open.

FH and our travel agent seem to think that we're still going to be able to fly in and have everything be fine. I insisted our travel agent check other options, and we can go to Antigua for the same price (yay travel insurance!) BUT we have to decide by Friday what we're doing.

I REALLY had my heart set on St. Lucia, but I'm not sure if it's worth risking it.

I don't know what to do!!

Are you serious? What resort are you staying at? Which airport are you flying into?

Re: I don't know what to do

i'm staying at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian and flying into Hewanorra Airport, which is like an hour away, but the only airport that Jet Blue flys into.

BTW, I would have never even know any of this if something didn't come up on the yahoo home page about the hurricane. Our travel agent was going to 'wait it out' before telling us!

For what it is worth, I just found out last week the cruise FH and I are taking for our honeymoon is no longer stopping at Antigua due to high levels of crime.

I don't know how true that is but for a ship not to shop there it must be pretty serious.

I'm not sure which airport though. The smaller airport was definitely open as of today...

Re: I don't know what to do

maybe you could fly into a neighboring island and take a boat to St Lucia?

I thought this was fairly do-able (but i've never been to the caribbean so i have no freakin' idea)

'Road damage from hurricane puts St. Lucia tourism on hold
By: Gay Nagle Myers
November 02, 2010
Hurricane Tomas has brought St. Lucia tourism to a standstill, as the Caribbean island doesn't expect to welcome new visitors until Nov. 5 because of impassable roads.

The two airports in St. Lucia — Hewanorra in Vieux Fort in the south and George F. L. Charles near Castries in the north — are open, but the roads between the two airports are impassable due to damage from Hurricane Tomas, which battered the island last weekend.

American Eagle is running several shuttles a day between George F.L. Charles and Hewanorra so travelers can take international flights off the island, according to Tourism Minister Allen Chastanet.

Also, American has added a daily flight from Miami to carry passengers off the island. No visitors are arriving until water is restored and the roads are passable.

Electricity has been restored except in Soufriere on the west coast

Chastanet said that St. Lucia 'hopes to be able to welcome visitors on Friday, Nov. 5. We won’t feel comfortable about having visitors here until then.'

Tomas did no damage to cruise ports or the airports. Cruise ships will resume calls in St. Lucia on Nov. 7.

'There was very little damage to hotels in St. Lucia. A few have some structural damage, but none are closed. They are doing cleanup this week and will welcome guests this weekend,' Chastanet said.

Most of the hurricane damage was in Soufriere. Homes in the hills above Soufriere were inundated with heavy rain, which triggered mudslides and contributed to road damage.

Chastanet said that supplies were transported to Soufriere via the north-south road last night, but that the drive was 'difficult, and everyone has been told to stay off the roads until repairs take place.'

I am with Royal and I don't see anything on the website. I must call to check. Are they stopping anywhere else instead??
