Everytime I read threads about how much to give as a wedding present, I end up feeling so bad and kind of embaressed.
We went to a wedding of one of my girlfriends about a year ago, (at the time FH didn't know her well at all, so I didn't expect him to give $. I gave the $. Plus, FH had just covered his friends wedding a month before, he gave his friends 300 from both of us). Anyway I only gave 150 from both of us. It was all I could afford at the time.
So now I feel as if they must think we are the cheapest people in the world, since everyone is saying to give 250-300. They have never said anything. But I feel so bad, like I totally didn't give them a good gift.

Do not feel cheap. You gave them what you can afford. If someone can only afford a little it should be appreciated. That is why I never complained about whatever little people gave me for my wedding because maybe that is all they can afford. I have learned to satisfy and be grateful no matter what the amount is. Cheer up.

I've given $150 plenty of times. No worries. The most I've given was $300 and I was sort of pissed that I even gave that much. Whatever...it's a gift - they can't complain.

$150 is fabulously generous compared to the $40 STARBUCKS GIFTCARD my friend got for her wedding last May. To make it all worse, it was from her boss who showed up with a guest he didn't even RSVP for! How good does $150 look now?

I think $150 is fine, your friend unbderstands..my sister had a really big elaborate wedding and the most common gift was $150 from a couple..and that was from people who were married, established, etc..

I had a friend that gave me $100 from her and her boyfriend, but I knew she was working 3 jobs, so I appreciated it. I didn't appreciate that she left my reception early. That pissed me off.

$150 is a beautiful gift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are a wonderful person to give that much money - that's more than a typical grocery shopping bill in our home!
Don't you ever feel cheap again, Tiffany. Not Ever.

Don't feel bad. In '98 I gave $125 for both of us but A) both of us weren't working and B) it was a buffet style wedding at a house.
BTW we never got a thank you note and really haven't been in touch with the couple since.

Re: I feel so cheap. Need a hug
We got several checks from couples that were $100. I don't think $150 is cheap at all. Not everyone can afford to give several hundred dollars as a gift. I'm sure your friend apprectiated the gesture.
Your friendship is more important than the $$ anyway.

Do not feel bad at all! No one expects you to go into debt for their wedding. I know for a fact that I am inviting people to my wedding that will not be able to cover their plate (nor would I expect them to). That is not why I am inviting people. The people at my wedding will be there to celebrate me and FH's love and marriage, and whatever they give us is a gift (whether it is $50, $150, or $300). Your friend probably did not even think anything of it because she was just happy that you were there. Obviously she is still your friend after this past year, so the gift did not get her upset. Plus $150 is a good gift. Don't feel bad or cheap!!!! Your a good friend for caring though!!!

I think that you give what you can and if someone is inviting you to the wedding they want you there because they want you not your money,

Re: I feel so cheap. Need a hug
There are so many factors that go into a financial gift. How much you can actually afford to give, how well you know the couple, how well your date knows the couple etc. The biggest factor obviously is how much you can afford. IMHO, the number one priority for the bride & groom is making sure the people around them to share their day are the people that mean something and will contribute to the overall atmosphere of making the day special - not how much is in an envelope.
Several years ago I went to a wedding two weeks after I got a job, after being unemployed for 3 years. I gave what I could. The following year, another couple (mutual friends of previously married couple & myself) got married. At that time I could definitely afford to give more, but made the decision not to, because I didn't want their gift to be larger than couple #1. However, neither gift was what I would consider 'cheap' at all.

A gift is about the gesture, not the amount. Don't feel guilty. I am sure you gave the couple your love - that is more important that the amount of the check.

Said PERFECTLY!!!!!!!
Exactly. People should not feel obligated to give more money just because the wedding is at Oheka and if the bride and groom feel that way then they will be surprised. Guests will give whatever they feel comfortable giving regardless of the location.
