I graduated from Precana

Original post by KimberlyBride

Brian and I finished precana last night. From all the negative things I have heard from other couples and on the board we were so pleasantly surprised. We really liked it. It was in a couples house and they were so nice. We both felt so comfortable talking and sharing. The other 3 couples were great too. So what did I talk about during break time...of course LI Weddings...haha. They had never heard of it. I almost fainted. I got their emails and sent them the links...lol.

Oh and my favorite part was when they had us face each other and hold hands and say our vows to each other. They wanted us to hear them and really think about the meaning now while we are not in front of everyone and really nervous. It was so sweet. All the ladies were crying. But it was awesome looking into Brian's eyes and seeing how happy he was looking at me. Ahhhh truly a special moment. Can't wait for the real thing on 10/15!

So to everyone who has heard some negatives about precana we had a great experience.

so glad you enjoyed it! We did the one day pre cana out in long beach on saturday. If you're looking for a painless pre cana - this is the one! 11am til 3:30, which includes a pizza break, plus two 20 minute breaks. Deacon John runs it and is adorable - talking about his wife Patricia - who is also there. He talks about marriage, fights, etc.

the one thing my pre cana didnt have that yours did, Kim, was interaction. We didnt talk at all. Not a word except for preliminary introductions. . . I would have liked some discussion, but I also wanted the one day option, so I shouldnt complain too much.

Did you have to watch a video where different potential situations were played out and a married couple would then talk on screen about how to solve problems? It was so funny, though i doubt it was meant to be. . . it was right out of another era - with people talking about women doing housework, the men being 'the breadwinners,' etc. Such a waste.

No no videos like that thank goodness. We filled out questions about different things and then discussed them with the group.

That's great Kim! We enjoyed ours too!

Do you think they tell you to hold hands when you fight so you feel the love, or is it just so you won't swing at eachother??

We had a great experience too. They even threw a party on the last night. I think my favorite 'excercise' was when they told us to close our eyes & hold up the number of fingers for the # of children we want and then opne your eyes and see what your fiance held up. I was suprised to see him hold up FOUR!! I held up three. I have a feeling we'll end up with two. But, all in all, it was a great experience. The only bad part was that it was on Wed. nights during Yankee playoff season. That was tough!

During Yankee playoffs? Oh Brian would not have gone...I would have been going alone! haha

I had a wonderful experience with precana too...and the deacon marrying us told us to hold hands when we fight also....

THEN he told us that when we're married to get NAKED and hold hands when we fight, lol...we found that really funny. He said 'you'd be amazed how hard it is to fight when you're naked'...

kim - thats so wonderful! I'm glad you got that out of the experience. We are not Catholic, but we chose an officiant who wants to meet with us for 3 sessions before the wedding to have us talk about our marriage, life, goals, and communication. It's so healthy and wonderful - a great foundation!

I think each PreCana depends on the session. We also had a party on the first night of our PreCana and our leaders where wonderful!

My favorite part was the group discussion with other engaged couples and the Agree/DisAgree game.

Basically you had to stand back to back with FH so could not see him. They would ask a question and depending on your answer you had to sit down if you agreed or stand up if you disagreed.

Some of the questions were:

'It is okay for my parents and inlaws to have a set of keys to our house/apartment'.

' It is okay for my husband/wife to go out with his/her friends without calling'

'It is important for me to go to church on a frequent basis with my wife/husband'

'It is okay for me to make a large purchase without consulting my wife/husband'

They really didn't care what you answered, it was more so if you were on the same page or not. If you disagreed then you and FH had to explain why you disagreed. Alot of times it was a misunderstanding or someting the couple already knew they disagreed on. But it was very interesting.

I also liked the couple prayer and our first 'unity' candle ceremony we had at our SUnday mass.

Kim is right precana was really fun. By the way I am new to this website. Yup like Kim said I was never on it (I am one of the couples at precana with her) My name is Jonneigh and my future husband's name is Jason. Happy to be on now though, Kim truly brags about it so much.

They told us to get naked too when we are angry at each other!
