I got annoyed at one store because I was buying one small item so I asked the cashier for her phone number. I think she got the point

I make one up too. Once I said 867-5309. The cashier didn't even blink. Oh well.
Anyway, I once asked why they ask, and they said that they look up your address with your phone number, and send you discounts.

So it was funny. I could barely say it with a straight face, and the woman behind me laughed, but the cashier was like and she was about my age. Did she live under a rock?

Well, legallly you guys don't have to give them a phone # and if you say you don't want to, they should back off.

Now, when you do return, they ask for your address and phone #. I asked in BN why. Supposedly there are people out there who would go into the store, pick up a book, and then try to return it!!! But the book was never bought!!! So BN loses $$$

Ok I hate it too, but I have to say:

I work for a retail store that requires FULL Information for ANY purchase - and there is good reason.

1. - People return things you would never expect. A $1 item and they realize they got the wrong thing. We have 40 stores. The fastest way to look up your receipt that YOU threw away because 'it's only $1, I don't need the receipt' is by your phone number. You don't want to give it, expect a headache because we also do mail order and there are about 300 people with the last name 'Marshall' in the computer system.

2. - Because we submit PAPER receipts to the C.C. companies, and they can dispute the charges if your info is not valid. We are not 100% automated yet.

3. - Your refund amount is more than we can give in cash - and now we can't change your info to send the check properly because you didnt give it the 1st time.

4. - You give the item as a gift, and now sister/nephew/grandma/brother etc... doesn't want to seem rude and ask you for the receipt (that you probably threw out anyway!!!) and now we look it up for them - based on YOUR info (because you never have theirs!)

5. - If you have defective merchandise that is still under manufacturer's warranty, even 5 years later, the manufacturer will require proof of purchase from YOU, not us. Luckily for you we keep these records under your name/address/phone #.

There are even more reasons than that, but you get the idea. I am totally serious about this - I can actually be FIRED for not complying with this rule!!! I hate asking as much as I hate being asked! Our company does NOT sell information - it remains 100% private and the only need for the headache is because of computers!!!

Sorry to rant, but you have NO IDEA how people manage to make my day SOOOO difficult even after I explain all of this to them - be compassionate towards your salesperson!

I understand that it is not the salesperson...but there is no way that I am giving my phonenumber...i don't care how legit it is...there is no reason you have to know...if I lose the receipt...thats my problem...

Its such an invasion of privacy...instead of making one up, you should tell them 'no'...that way they can see how many people DO NOT want to give out PERSONAL information...
