I hate my job right now

I just wanna move away from Long Island and NYC even though I grew up around here. FH and I are talking about it in a few years but I want to now! My job is gonna be the death of me.

The rain was soooooo bad this morning. It took me THREE hours to drive to Brooklyn, THREE. That's crazy. I was an hour late for work. So number 1, I hate my commute. And it was scary driving, cuz of the downpouring and water that was flooding the highways.

Number 2, my kids this year are gonna drive me crazy. They just have such a lack of motivation and they aren't bad, they just don't listen. And it's frustrating everyday how loud they get. They have absolutely no respect for authorities or adults or their peers. My co-teacher and I both leave work everyday with pounding headaches.

So I'm tired of commuting and working in the inner-city schools as horrible as that might sound. It's so different than any other system i've worked for. Plus, my kids said today that if they could vote, they would vote for Obama just cuz he's black. They actually said that! (the school is 99% caribbean american and maybe 1% hispanic). We told them you don't vote for someone based on color or race, that you vote based on the things they stand for. I can't believe some of the things that come out of their mouths. They know more curse words than I do and they are 8 and 9 yrs old!!

i totally feel your pain and sympathize with you. I know how long commutes can s uck, and are even worse in the rain or snow.

Last year I worked in the South Bronx and I drove there every day from Long Island. The commute was absolute hell and dreaded waking up every morning to go to work. When I got there I wasn't happy because my principal was the worst person in the world and my kids just didn't listen. They didn't seem to care that they were in school. It was basically just a babysitter for a bunch of 5th graders. I couldn't take it anymore. I kept saying last year that I wanted to quit. Finally, this year I got a new job and I couldn't be happier. I love where I am teaching now and my principal is great. I'm still contemplating a move off of LI after the wedding, but at least for now, I'm happy.

I'm sorry you're having trouble with your job rightnow. Commuting does suck. I couldn't imagine driving into the city every day.

I totally understand with where you're coming from with whole voting for obama thing. I started talking about the election this week w/ my kids. They too would vote for obama if they could vote, but dont know why. They think mccain is evil and dont know why. They didnt know the name of the two major political parties in the u.s. THey didnt know if obama was a democrat or republican.
It is REALLY frustrating. People just dont understand how hard it is to be a teacher!!!

I've tried for the past 3 yrs to find a job on LI closer to home. I like the school I work in, it's just the class this year. And my commute is getting to me once again! It is so difficult to find a position at a public school on LI. It's very competitive. I have 3 yrs experience, a masters in special ed, and dual certification in regular and special ed and I can't even get an interview! My class this year is just another stress that will eventually pass. But once I start a family, no way am I commuting anymore! FH can support us for awhile

let me ask fh's parents when i see them next week.. they're both retired LI teachers and they still sub every now and then.

ill let you know if i get anything helpful from them in terms of getting interviews and what not.

heres a way to look at it.. you became a teacher to to help children and be a change agent. i know kids can be difficult.. i have 26 9th graders but remind yourself as often as you have to that they are just kids.. and unfortunately or fortunately they NEED you in order to have a chance in becoming functioning members of society. and thats what we're there for right?

about the commute... that just $ucks!

you are totally right. i think of those things often. i know i'm making some difference and that i'm that person for now that is steady and there for them in their lives. especially when there are a bunch of foster kids in and out of homes. and those that don't even have parents around for other reasons. it's hard though as you know and u lose sight of that sometimes and just get frustrated, but that's why we're in this profession lol. thanks for saying all that

no problem... i know EXACTLY how you feel... sometimes we just lose sight of what we're doing and feel under appreciated and disrespected..and need a little reminder... and thats what we're here for! but you are doing a great thing!!!
