My DH and I have been ideal tenants for the past 2 1/2 years, never missing a day and even paying early sometimes. Well this morning we get a note saying they are raising our rent $100 a month in 2004!!! It's not a ridiculous amount, but I'm still annoyed. I know about inflation and all of that, but we pay our own utilities so I have no idea why they are doing this besides personal reasons. I already know our rent payments go to their business (they own a company and have told us on occasion that they need rent early for payroll... so maybe we are paying for someone's promotion!). It's funny because DH and I are talking about buying a small condo or coop somewhere on the island, and this is just more motivation for us to look harder! Still, it $uck$ in the meantime!

Our landlord told us once that she was going to raise our rent. We told her to drop dead. It wasn't worth it. Well, we haven't heard from her since. We send the checks out every month and never ever have to see her. I love living with an absentee landlord!! Property taxes have gone up because of all that reassessment, maybe thats why they raised your rent.

It sucks but property taxes have gone WAY up this year. And in the past 3 years, insurance rates have gone up in some areas as well. So assuming you are not paying for the taxes and insurance, that might be the reason they are raising the rent.

Renting does suck! We moved into the basement apartment in my grandparents house almost a year ago and pay very little rent. FH and I were living on our own (separately) for about 4 years and we figured out that we paid over $50,000 to our landlords....that is insane!

That sucks. Do you rent in a house or a complex? One year my rent went up $300, needless to say I moved.
We signed a two year lease in this apartment because we were gauranteed only a $25 increase the second year but if we only did a one year it could have been raised anywhere from $25 to $150 a month. Ugh I can't wait to buy a house.

Sorry they did that to you. Where are you looking for a co-op. Suffolk or Nassau? You have a great apartment but you guys and your critters are probably growing out of the space. Better to won something for the tax benefit until you find your dream house in the woods
