I hate the way my dress looks- can I get a new one in five months?(LONG-HELP???)

OK, this is a long story and I don't normally post stuff like this but I am having a major problem. I bought my dress last year and at the time loved it ,thought it was perfect for me. It was a bit poufy , not what I thought I would have went for but my mom and good friend raved about it, encouraged me and I did love it at the time. In fact, tried it on three different places, al lthe people at the differnet shp told me it was MY dress...it was totally NOT what I thought I would have gone for (I originally wanted a little slip like dress, this is more of a ball gown. Anyway, fast forward to two weeks ago. My dress came in and I went to try it on, well I tried it on and number one, it barely fit (and I am only three pounds more than I was when I bought it) and it didn't feel right, I don't know how to explain it but it didn't feel like it fit right. I did like it though. My mom took pictures and I was jsut thinknig ok, I can lose a few pounds. Well, I got the pictures back and needless to say the dress photographs horribly on me, I took out the pictures and the first picture I looked at broke out in tears. I was so upset. I am not a large girl and it made, me look large and just as though I had no waist, I was horrified. I called my mom, who said I was crazy and I just couldn't discuss it anymore with her. Well now I am having a major dilemna. I have not even completely paid for the dress, which I know I wil lhave to regardless of whether I wear it or not. It is not a matter of the dress fitting right, I just don't like it on me and don't think i would even if it fit right, it photographs HORRIBLE!!! What's weird is when I bought the dress there were no pictures available as it was new and when the picture came out, I hated the picture but kept telling myself that is not how it looks on me. Now, I'm wondering what to do, do I have time to get another dress, is my mom going to kill me (she was paying for the dress) what do I do with the dress, what do I tell the salon. My FI says get something that makes me happy and this dress does not but I searched and searched prior to buying it, I think I made abad decision but my wedding is in October, I have no idea what to do. Any advice? Has anyone had the same situation? I don't even know if I can order a dress intime for my wedding if I wanted to. It has jsut put me in a reall bad mood about the whole wedding .I want to feel beautiful on my wedding day and I know with this dres I will not.....

I don't know if this helps, but I loved my dress when I ordered it. Tried it on at the first fitting and hated it. It seemed very poofy and I felt HUGE in it. Well, it was altered and now I love my dress. So I guess what I'm trying to say is maybe you will like it better when it fits properly.

Before you decide to look for another dress, why don't you go talk to the seamstress or the store manager at the salon where you bought it? Maybe she can make changes in the dress to make you happy. I know of three sisters who all wore the same gown and all were very different body shapes - from size 4 or 6 to size 20 or more. They took a piece off the hem and opened up the sides of the gown. It looked completely different yet beautiful on each sister.
Good Luck.

Can you post a pic!!? Make sure that changing your dress is what you want. This might be verry costly. You can try to buy samples at bridal stores or find designers that dont take a long time to deliver. Good luck

I agree with Amy. At least try on some other gowns and see if you feel any better about the dress you have.

It can be done! I got engaged in late September and married in February (my wedding was exactly 5 months 1 day from when I got engaged) ordered my dress in early October and it was in exactly when they said it would be.

I ordered a Casablanca gown and heard tons of good things about their service, so you might want to check into them (casablancabridal.com). Their dresses come in on time.

Good luck!

How about trying to get a sample gown? You would leave the store with it so you know you would have time for alterations. The Wedding Center has a ton, that is where my FSIL got hers for $99. The majority of them are size 10, but there were some in every size.

If other brides say it can be done then do it. Don't settle for a dress that doesn't make you happy. It's the one day that 1million people will be taking pictures of you and if you don't like the dress then you have to get one that makes you comfortable. Good Luck

Honey stop the press...

I am going through the same thing...and my wedding is about 2 months away....

I believe you hate the way you look in the pic...bec. you do not like the dress.

It is that simple.

You do have enough time, order another gown, even if you have to have it rushed....Don't settle.

I too feel the same.....I am going to go to the city today to look for a 2nd dress !
I know exactly how you feel.
It won't hurt to look around.
I am hoping after looking around I fall in love with my dress again.
Good luck

I know exactly how you feel. I bought 2 dresses too. I changes my mind about the first one and ordered another one. I don't know if you feel comfortable doing this but I ordered mine online (ebay.) The fist one took 3 months and the second one took 1 month. The two of them together cost less than $600 so I don't feel so bad and I'm going to sell the one I don't wear on ebay myself. I'm attaching pictures of the dresses. The first one is a Casablanca (pretty reasonably priced brand that you can find in most bridal shops) but I don't know what brand the 2nd one is. Hoep this helps.

Chicago gal those dresses are great! I LOVE the 2nd one!

I bought the first dress I tried on (I tried 6 on total). I loved it because I had an idea in my head of what I wanted and this was it. If you don't like your dress get another one. Sell the old one and buy one you are going to love. It is your day and you want to feel wonderful and happy - get a dress that makes you feel that way. I'm sure your mother will understand. 5 months is more than enough time (I've had 2 friends plan a wedding in that much time - believe me these places want your $$ and will be happy to find you a dres you can get in time). Good luck and happy shopping! Don't stress!

I agree with Brideshelper that maybe there is something that they can do to help you like the dress. I hope all works out for you!

I bought a dress at Macy's Bridal Salon in Manhasset and when it came in I hated it. WEnt to the Macy's in NYC and got a sample dress (since the Bridal Salon in that macy's had just opened, the sample was brand new) and I bought that one. I could not return the old dress, but they let me off the hook with the balance of the first dress since they took pity on me. But I can't say every store will do that.

Sign up for theknot.com - I found out about the sample sales and trunk shows that way.
If you end up buying another dress, talk to the store owner. If they are nice they'll try to help. They might have to call the manufacturer since they order the dresses right from them and they have to approve taking the dress back.
If they won't - you can always try to sell it on ebay. You may not make back all your money but you might get some back.

You may also want to consider having a seamstress make a dress for you. If you know of a good one (someone on here used Blanchee in E. Rockaway and loved her dress, I think it was Swags) you can show her pictures of a dress and if she can do it in less than 5 months, it is another way to go.

Either way, you should be happy in your dress because we all know if you don't feel good in your clothing then you feel uncomfortable all day, and it shows. This is the best day of your life and if getting another dress means it makes your day better, you should pursue it!

Thanks to everyone who replied. I'm feeling better and have made the decision to get a new dress. First, I am going to call the salon and see if I have any options, although I am sure I don't and will have to pay but after all this wedding is costing, I should have a dress I love. Hopefully I will find something. I keep thinknig about if someone told me this situation, I would advise them the same way, get another that you love. I want a dress that I can't wait to wear! Good luck to all that are having similiar situations....I'll keep you posted, the dress hunt begins....again!!!

if you really need to get another dress, try bride couture ...lemme get the linkbridecouture.com

When my dress didn't look like it was coming in on time, I got a Vera Wang dress from them. I t came in 3 days & when I didn't take the dress, I sent it back & they refunded my $$ - no questions asked. The only thing I had to do was find a seamstress to do the alterations. The day after I got the dress from them, my original dress came in, so after a lot of drama, I kept the 1st dress.

I also did not like the poufyness of my dress, so I had them remove all the crinoline & wore a simple slip instead of a bridal slip. I t totally changed the look (& fit) of my dress.
