I am so so pissed off. I got it from my school. Some darn worm is going through the internet system at school and any computer with continuous internet access has the d@mn thing. I have wireless internet - so boom the second i put in my wireless card i got it.
Symptoms - the entire computer shuts down within a minute- I am so fricken frustrated!! I have so many notes- which i finally saved to disk - but i also have all my wedding research

The shutdown virus happens if your PC/laptop is not properly patched. Make sure you have installed all your windows updates. If its a Windows XP laptop..... go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and install all critical updates on the left side.
The windows updates website is the same as that little icon that appears on the bottom right next to the time that says 'new updates ready to download/install'.
If you would have installed those updates... you probably wouldn't have gotten the virus.

Not enough people use macs to bother writing viruses.
That will tell you what viruses you have. There are removal tools for most of them at Symantec's website. Sounds like you have Sasser or something similar.
Go to windows update like someone said earlier once you get rid of the virus. If you need more help, FM.
it's almost definitely sasser. everyone has it practically. all our work computers had it yesterday and we couldn't do anything for two hours, nice break, but then i had to rush rush rush at the end of the day so i could leave!

Ok i fixed my updates and i dont have a problem - yet - it may just be the connection at school - i guess i'll see tomorrow.

How is he evil? Have you ever seen how much money the guy gives away? He just gave India $200,000,000.00 yesterday to help fight Aids in their country. Oh yes, he's evil alright.
People who write viruses are not hackers, they are morons with nothing better to do. Dying to see their name in the spot light. So making one for Mac is useless, because it won't spread fast enough anyway. Seeing as Apple has anti-virus programs as well, you can be sure they realize it's always a possibility.
It's not hard to secure a windows machine, and take a look at the software aisles at any store. Then look at the Mac shelf. That's why I use PC, I don't hate Mac.

I have no idea what type of software you are looking for that won't run on a mac. Granted- if you want to play video games on your computer all day- then yeah, a PC is for you- however in terms of everyday use, wordprocessing, graphics, making movies, etc- I daresay the new Mac OX X is more stable than Windows...
I thought people who wrote viruses were hackers who want to destroy computer systems... as opposed to hackers who want to get info illegally out of computer systems.
I am have used both MACs and PCs forever now- and people who say they 'hate Macs' ... they have no real experience in them- or they work with PCs & like the money you get fixing them up of the constant stream of viruses.

See I don't hate Macs, nor do I hate people for using them. It's actually the Mac people who hate PC's and act high and mighty because they will believe whatever Steve Jobs tells them.
If I had extra cash, I'd consider buying a mac laptop. Macs are not useful in a business world, for the most part though. If your business is graphics, or video processing, then yeah. The cost is too high, because every hardware part of an Apple comes from Apple directly. This was a key mistake in strategy for them, and where IBM really helped themselves.
I think OSX is a cool operating system. It's nice that it's built on a Unix backend, that makes it stable. BUT unix is full of security holes, new ones are found almost daily. So that should be a concern to OSX users. As far as stability, I haven't used OSX on a decent machine so I can't say, but my Windows XP machine never crashes.

I don't hate PCs.. I just know that I am not an 'upkeep' type of girl.. i want a computer to turn on every time and I don't want to worry about viruses, updates, etc- I have too much stuff going on to deal with that- so because I get the educational discount (which all computer manufacturers do, not just apple) I went for the apple lap top- which is SO SWEET. To compare my Mac laptop to a PC laptop (anything BESIDES Sony machines which I love- but they are even more $ than Macs) is to compare a Mercedes with a Honda Civic. both are extremely reliable, but the Mercedes has class
I just love my Mac laptop- i have the 15' powerbook.. it's fantastic- but expensive... I got lucky though b/c I got the powerbook, a printer and a 20gig iPod for under $2500!
