When we met with the catering manager about a month before the wedding, they calculated the estimated total amount due including tax, service charge, etc. The balance that was due after that included the tax & SC. I'm not sure why they are saying you have to pay tax on that amount.

I guess any extras that pop up on the day of the wedding - extra guests or OT would have the tax & sc added on.

Why would you be paying the reception the night of the wedding? Don't you do your final payment the week of? I thought the only way you would have to pay them that night is if you had more people come at the last minute or added overtime.

our final payment was due on the Monday before our Sat wedding...in CASH. I think the last payment in cash is a norm but Im glad we had to make payment before, so I didnt have to worry about anyone carrying that type of $$$ all night!!

We paid the Monday before via certified check just like Jennbaby. That night the 'final' payment means any incidentals that night that you hadn't paid for- such as say 5 more people showing up that RSVPd 'no' or something...

Just because it's due in cash doesn't mean you don't have to pay tax on it- that's just a think people do to not report the money earned. I used to work at a catering facility- all of that money is reported but it is due in cash in case you write a bad check or something and it isn't credit card because you can always call & cancel it.

Your hall says you have to pay cash? That sounds shady to me.

If you go over your final payment on the actual night of the wedding it is usually protocol for that payment to be cash.

It makes sense to pay tax the night of IF you are paying for extra guests. Why wouldn't they tax on those - if you were previously taxed on the original headcount?

the accountant in me can kinda see them wanting cash the night of the reception. what's to stop somebody from writing a bum check, especially since the reception will be long over when the hall tries to cash the check?? all rules like this - means the hall got burned by somebody at some point, so now they want cash.

our hall(manor east) requires cash or certified check due the tuesday(i think) before the wedding on saturday(personal checks are allowed for all other payments before then)

This is not an under the table transaction - the tax is recorded on the contract.

They require cash for their own protection - like it was stated above how do they know if the check won't bounce or the credit card company called to cancel the charges.

We made all of our payments in cash to smcc except for the original deposit...never had one problem...they write everything out on the contract for you...

I dont know about other halls but smcc is very reputable and imo..would never try anything like that. Good luck!
