I have an engagement party question from my mom - TIA

Original post by diamondgrlie

I am not having an engagement party but my mom and dad just got invited to one. There was no notice of where they are registered. Also, when my mom was reading a wedding magazine in the hair salon, she saw an article that said no gifts are necessary for an engagement party. We dont think that is right... is it?

We always give money for e-parties. I personally think gifts are for showers and would be a little turned off to have a registry mentioned in an e-party invite. The money we got for our e-party has reallly helped us out with some wedding stuff, I'll get everything we need at the shower.

I don't understand why it is okay to accept money at an e-party but not mention the registry in the invite. Whats the difference? So far, everyone is saying that they wouldn't go to an e-party empty handed (which I agree with), so why wouldn't you want to know where the couple is registered so you can give them a gift they will love and enjoy?

I can only speak for myself but I did not want to register for 3 reasons.
One was that My wedding date was over 2 years away at the time and if I registered, half my stuff would be discontinued by the time the shower rolls around.
Two, we have lived together for over 2 years and we have pretty much everything.
And three, if people were going to give a gift we wanted it to be $. (I know how bad that sounds)
If I wanted gifts I would have registered for a few things.
I think it's safe to say that if there is no registry info they either did not register yet and/or they want $.

Technically, it's bad ettiquette to mention a registry on any invite, but it's more acceptable on a shower invite because it's understood that people will 'shower you with gifts' for your new home. We didn't feel right registering or even expecting gifts for our e-party, it was more of a way to get our family and bridal party together. We were very happy to recieve the money and it has really come in handy.

I would get a gift card to a home related store, like fortunoff's.

I got my friend crystal candle sticks, but she got tons of candle sticks for her engament party. I felt bad, I tried to get her soemthing she'd use.( I thought she'd get more vases, but she got 1 that she returned)

We had an E-party and made people aware of where we were registered. We got tons of gifts, no $... If I could do it over, maybe would have not of let on where we were registered, because we could have used the cash for the wedding. But over all, we needed the gifts too, because we bought are new home and it helped fill our kitchen with lots of goodies.
