I have lots of BF questions...

I have lots of BF questions...

... but I'll ask this one for now. Since I brought Caiden home, he only eats on one side at every feeding, and he only eats for 5-15 minutes each time. (It's different every time). The Pediatrician said if he's efficient enough to only eat on side for that amount of time, there's nothing wrong with it. He's gaining the weight he's suppose to be. The doc said since he's a big boy, and a STRONG sucker that he's getting what he needs. I would think that since he's bigger, he would eat more? While I was in the hospital, he ate on both sides? Though I don't think he was eating as good. Is it bad for him to be eating only on one side at each feeding? Will that hurt my milk supply? I don't have a pump yet, or the supplies so I can start pumping the side he's not eating. Is this what I should be doing? Pumping will be my next set of questions!!!

I only nurse Damien on one side at each feeding. He does just fine. When he was only a few weeks old he did the same thing and only nursed for 5-15 minutes and then would fall asleep.

As long as Caiden is gaining weight and has enough wet diapers I wouldn't worry.

I have actually read an article that it is good to have them nurse on one side for each feeding.

Don't worry Melissa sounds like you are doing an excellent job!!!

BTW: Nursing on one side for different feedings gives your boobs a break, which is much needed in the beginning!!

I only nursed Emma on one side per feeding. SOMETIMES she would do both but it was very unusual. I used to pump but it was such a PITA so I stopped. Shes 19 months and I still have enough milk for her so I dont think it hurts the supply

Maria also nurses on only one side at a time. I was also concerned about my supply but my LC assured me that I would be ok. She did recommend that since I'll be going back to work soon anyway, that I could pump the other breast at each feeding and start building up a supply of milk for the freezer. Also, she said that as babies get older, they get more efficient & need to nurse less, not more .... which I was surprised at, but she's gaining weight, so she's definitely getting what she needs!

We bought the Medela Pump in Stlye & are very happy with it. I also have the Advent Isis manual pump that we bought right away to do some occasional pumping which worked out well also. I think your choice will be determined by your needs.

Good luck!

Briana nurses on one side at each feeding. I alternate my breast at each feeding. She is also doing well.

As long as you are alternating which breast you offer the baby at every other feeding, than it is absolutely fine. The important thing for your supply is to make sure that you empty at least one side with each feeding!
