Well, if I rinse it really well and have it steamed later...Maybe it won't leave any film?
I've heard that Windex can dye the stone blue...But I find that hard to believe. Diamonds are supposed to be the strongest substance.
It doesn't dye it blue- just leaves a blue residue. I use rubbing alcohol and rinse with hot water- it works perfectly!!!

1/2 ammonia and 1/2 warm water. no damage. top jewelers in manhattan and long island recommend it. tiffany's recommends it also - I believe on their website.

Re: I have my ring soaking...UPDATED
i used to use windex to clean my ring- until i went to go to my jeweler in the city to pick up my wedding band- he cleaned my engagement ring for free. he asked me if i was using windex.. he showed me with his eyepiece all of the blue specks that it leaves inthe diamond, i couldnt believe it!!!!....
he told me its not really good to clean it with windex. he suggestioned soaking it in rubbing alcohol for a few minutes and and then using a brush to brush it...

I was told by my appraiser that the amonia can actually damage the stone. She said hot water with a little dish soap should do the trick.
same here after doing it for a while.. i use a toothbrush and fantastic it works great (i was told to do this)

Toothpaste (NOT the gel kind) works wonders on all jewelry! I've used it on my grandmother's tarnished antique jewelery and they have come out almost good as new.

my grandmother has been cleaning her ring w/ boiling water and amonia for like 75 years. - and it's still stunning. - my cousin works for a jewler and tells me to use regular glass cleaner. - hmmmm, that one makes me nervous

I microwave a little bit of dishwashing liquid in water for about 45 seconds. Take it out of the microwave and soak my ring in it for about 10 minutes. Then I rinse the ring in really hot water--it works!! Just don't microwave your ring

I'm going to go clean my ring with toothpaste right now. I have always used toothpaste to shine up silver jewelry. It's so quick and easy and it doesn't make your hands dirty like silver polish does.

Re: I have my ring soaking...UPDATED
I just use an ammoni based jewelry cleaner. $4. I soak it then brush it, rinse with warm water, voila!
Also, if you wear it during a hot shower that tends to clear it a bit!
Those f you who said you dont clean your rigns..try it!
Every time I do it, I'm mazed at how much my ring sparkles, it's like, I forgot it could do be that brilliant!

Just use the jewelry cleaner that the jewelry stores sell (or should have given you when your fiance bought your ring).

Re: I have my ring soaking...UPDATED
I recently bought a sonic jewelry cleaner from Bed Bath and Beyond. I'm glad to hear that some of you had used amonia based products and that there's not damage... the cleaner I bought runs on batteries but the cleanser is amonia based. I saw in the directions that it's safe for diamonds and even cubic zirconia, but I was still hesitant and considered bringing it back b/c I was afraid to damage my ring. I recently went to a jewelry store to add tifany beads to my ring b/c it was a little big on my bony fingers. The guy polished up the back of the band (it's 18k white gold and I'm regretting not asking FH for platnum b/c I scratched the crap out of it), but I'm not sure what he did but it looks tarnished almost makes it look like yellow gold on the back or like it was burned by the polisher. I want to bring it to a different jeweler to see if they can fix that... it's the back of the band though so looking at the stones you'd never know.
