DH and I are thisclose to closing on a house in Derby, CT. Its a great area, but it is a bit far north-do you need to commute into NYC to work? If so, the train ride alone is like 70 mins. But we got a great house for the money, the same house in LI would probably go for double. Of course, I have to find another job thats closer, but our house is commuting distance to Stamford, New Haven and Hartford, so I am hoping I will find something soon. FM me if you want any more info on the area...
And my DH has an irrational hatred of NJ too. I dont know why, but glad to know hes not the only crazy one

Derby is between Stamford and New Haven, its in the area called the Valley- Shelton, Huntington, Orange and Milford are other towns that are right by it. Its about 40 mins from Stamford, heading east.

I don't know why also but Enzo HATES NJ with all of his heart. We went there about a month ago and the people were sooo nasty to us (please don't be offended those who live in NJ) and every since he wants nothing to do with NJ.

westchester is a pricey area. i would suggest- although i know you say you've looked- in conn or in jersey (although your husband hates it there are nice areas). as someone else suggested, looking a bit north of the westchester is a good idea. things are so much cheaper there. my parent's friends used to leave in seaport in nassau in a tiny, tiny house- they sold it for 390K and bought a house (forget the town's name- will find out for you) a bit upstate for 430K on the water and it is over 4000 square feet. it's about 2-3 years old. they are 45 minutes away from the city. so you can get a whole lot more there.

Re: I have spent past 1hr looking at Realtor.Com
check out Tryon, NC
That's where we're looking (in next few years)
Some homes are in the millions but most are ridiculously reasonable. But the cost of living is much less too.

Try orange co in ny rockland co in ny (it's over the tappan zee bridge which sometimes is a nightmare travelling over it w/ traffic but train commuting is fine) dutchess co in ny the further away from metro ny, the cheaper it is (for the most part)
I'm even considering outside Albany if not NC
