I have the wedding blues.....

Original post by gaccrrm

We are planning and planning and the cost of the wedding keeps going up. We are soley paying for this and now its starting to take a toll on us. My FH now wants to cancel everything so we can go to the justice of the peace and buy a house sooner. I am sooo sooo sad . Is anyone else out there going through this?

You should do what we are doing. We are traveling to Pigeon forge TN. There is a wedding chapel you can check out www.goldenvalleyweddings.com . The wedding planner takes care of everything. For a formal wedding with a beautiful cake, Sit down dinner for 65 at a nice hotel banquet room, flowers, tux's 5,ooo. Dollars and it's so beautiful.

I can absolutely relate. Yesterday morning before I had to go to work I was looking at the reception hall guide on this site to try and narrow down to a few choices where we want our reeption. I heard the mail come, and was delighted to receive two new books I had ordered: Wedding Planning for Dummies and Home Buying for Dummies. (Along with all this month's credit card statements). I almost had a panic attack right then and there! (And it didn't help that when I told FH about it, he said 'it's ok we can put the ceremony off by a year if you want.' Sooo not what I want!)

Thanks everyone for all your kind words and suggestions. We went with a package deal to cut all of the costs. I am so sad to think that it is a possility that I might not have a big wedding and to top it off I got a call today to say the BM dresses were in. I got all excited and then it hit me and I got really sad.

I'm with you...in fact, up til last week FH was in school and I was the ONLY one paying for anything....ways i found to keep the cost down (but not cheap..that seems impossible):
*having a SMALL guest list ~ that's the bottom line
*a lot of DIY stuff, including invitations, STDs, etc.
*figuring out what our priorities are~ if photography is really important to us, what can we sacrifice or hold back on?

Good luck and remember that the only thing that matters is that he is at the end of the aisle for you on your wedding day!

The best way to cut back on costs is to cut that guest list down, down, down. You can also do candles and rose petals for centerpieces and you can have a friend do video. My wedding is going to have 70-80 guests and is under 15K and it is not skimpy or cheap in any way!

Would you ever consider this:

Having your immediate family....and I mean immediate....to keep the number very small (under 30) and have a ceremony in your Rabbi/Priest/Pastor/JOP study, followed by a meal at a nice restaurant?

One of the most beautiful weddings I've ever been to was exactly that. It was SO INTIMATE and beautiful. Every guest played a role in the wedding and was part of it. The only flowers were the bride's bouquet, and the music was a single pianist. It was the classiest event I've ever been to.

Is that something you would want to do?

This is almost what FH and I did. We were originally planning to fund the entire wedding ourselves, and couldn't afford to do more than this. Then my parents and his parents got together and decided to chip in $15K so we (okay, so I) could have a big wedding like I wanted. The rest of the costs are coming from FH and I and we're just saving A LOT and buying virtually nothing until the wedding.

Good luck. Think of the little things that add up and aren't really necessary. If you'll be happy without something (limo, caketopper, slippers, etc), don't feel obligated to include it just because a lot of people on the boards are having it. Hang in there!

Yup-I'm not blue about it, just stressed. We found a house we LOVE and made an offer $59,000 below price, and the owner budged a lot, but FH is saying we should ix the big wedding and put it towards the house. So I comprimised, we cut the guest list from 230 to 190 so far. Hang in there, we are just trying to cut out some of the extras. You can still have an amazing wedding and not kill yourselves working for it.

I've had the wedding blues since I got engaged... don't feel so bad. Consider taking a loan out and try to cut your cost where you can.
