Ever have a fourth grader bust into tears in the middle of the hallway because you asked her friends to participate in a festival, but not her because she's not ready yet? Yeah, just had that.
Here's to hoping that I don't get a parent phone call over this. . .if I do, I will explain to the parent what I told the child (in adult terms of course).
Back to thinking about all things wedding during my lunch. . .

Oh, it's a music festival. . .sorry, forgot that we have girls who weren't born and bred in NY here!

Why can't she participate in the lowest level? I did NYSSMA for violin when I was around that age and I ******, but I still did it.

I did NYSSMA early as 4th grade- they have level 1 solos that are equivalent of ' Mary had a little lamb' lol.

I did, too! This kid is struggling a lot with her note reading this year, so I want her to wait to feel more confident with it.
However, she got really upset because one of her friends who I want to send to NYSSMA was picked to represent the class in the school-wide spelling bee this week. 'I never get picked for anything! I hate fourth grade!' is what I had to counteract.
I HATE this part of teaching music. . .disappointing good kids, but it's in their best interests. Of course, a 9 year old doesn't know how to see it that way quite yet.
