I don't think it's tacky at all to handwrite them. Save yourself the $$$.
I'm very good at the computer (did my own computer calligraphy for the invitations, etc.), but I'll probably handwrite my place cards ...

I used Inkspun. It was cheap and saved me the hassel of doing them myself. And no, I dont think its tacky to hand write them.

Honestly, by the time it was time for me to do my place cards, there was so much more to think about and so little time. i just hand wrote them. My handwriting isn't great but no one paid attention. They look nice for a minute and then you go to your table. Save your $. If your sister can help you then let her. Mine was willing but it took me 20 minutes to do my own and it was done lol. I didn't care by that point. The invitations however, I printed them on the computer. It took me forever lol.

I bought a place card kit from AC Moore with a 40% coupon for $2.50 for 48 of them and they were super easy to do.
I then stuck the card onto brown cardstock and voila!!

I think I am going to have someone hand write the names on them in calligraphy.
BUT if I weren't doing that... I was going to print them from the computer on card stock... cut the paper (I have a paper cutter) and then go over the names with a metallic marker so they looked hand written... but professionally hand written. I am also using different color paper for the place cards... so different shades of blue with the metallic writing.

i did them myself...blue ones that matched the color scheme, and then white ones from michaels, printed the names on the white ones and cute them out and glued them to the blue cards! lol there was prob a way easier way to do it, but we bought the blue ones first and didnt like how it looked to print them right on the blue, so thats how the while came into the picture into the picture.

Michaels sells blank printable place cards with the website info for the template....I typed them all myself, printed then and used sticky dots to put a pink flower in each corner....I'll try to find a pic for you.....
I don't think it's tacky at all to handwrite them. That's what my sister did for her wedding and I didn't hear a single guest say that the wedding would have been great, except for those handwritten escort cards.
I didn't have the patience to handwrite them. DH made origami sailboats to use as the escort cards and I printed labels with everyone's names. Then my sister wrote the table numbers on the sails.

I won mine from T*ssa, but if I hadn’t I probably would have just used the ones from the RH and hand written them. If they’re really cute sometimes people notice, but otherwise I don’t think they really pay attention.
DH's godmother is a calligrapher (well, art teacher who does calligraphy gorgeously) and she did it for us. They came out really nicely. Honestly, I would not think anything of a hand written one as long as it wasn't messy!

I think I'm going to have my sister do them, my handwriting is god awful, and my mom or sister's isn't much better.

I printed mine on the computer on the little folding cards you can get at Staples.
(Fortunately, DH's cousin took a picture of hers so I can show you how they came out...):
My mom helped me rip them all apart since they were fold and tear. I think they came out great. I actually put our little personal symbol thingy on the back of all of them since I could since I was printing them at home!

I thought of using Inkspun but I was in Staples and saw placecards that were pretty nice and not too expensive. I wound up doing them myself and they came out great! It was sooo easy. I downloaded the template (instructions came with the placecards) and it literally took 20 minutes to type up all the names.
ETA: I left the table number blank so I could just fill them in when I was sure that the seating wasn't going to change at all. I don't think it looked bad at all with just the hand written number.
I think handwriting them is fine, with all of the amazing details you are going to have at your wedding I'm sure no one will be thinking, 'wow, she hand wrote her place cards.' I think it is totaly fine as long as they are neat
