ugh.

I just submitted my assignment for an online class I am taking. I am kind of satisfied with my snotty/condescending answers. I do not get a grade in this class though - so I am safe. As long as I participate and complete the assignments - I pass and get my 3 credits.

I can't take it though. The whole concept of the 'Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus' issue.

Do you buy into that?

curious.

I don't buy it. That's just what people who don't care to understand the opposite sex say.

I think I am preaching to the choir here. Maybe, I knew that subconsciously, and that is why I posted it. HA.

Anyhoo, do tell about that avatar.

You know I tried to read the book about, oh whatever a few years ago and the more I read the more I seemed like the man!!!!

After about 50 pages I finally put the damn thing down only to find out shortly after I did that the asss that wrote it got divorced!

In terms of the idea itself? People are people and each sex is innately different because our reason for existence is spelled out in our own anatomy. They help us create the child and we bear it. Just the way it is. Because of that we are different. That's it. Are we from different planets - I really hope not... There is no single formula that works for all men and all women and to lump us by sex into categories can be dangerous. There are generalizations we can make but we can do that with just about any group. Kids ages 12 - 15, African Americans, Gay men, Baby boomers... whatever - there are stereotypes for all of us and face it, some of it is right on the money and some of it isn't. You can argue both sides for days and you know what, in the end, both sides will have some valid points and some really weak ones. We are just humans and screwed up. The aliens watch us and laugh. We are their entertainment!

No, I do not buy into that.

However, I approve of the snark. Especially for pass/fail class.

Oddly enough... the majority of the people I with are coaches, therapists and authors of self help books! Many MANY of them are the OPPOSITE of what you think they would be. I mean - these folks tell other people how to be positive, be successful, be happy - but they call my office and are some of the most horrible, condescending and miserable people I have EVER spoken to! Oh the irony.

As to that specific book. I tried reading it and found it profoundly boring. I can't say whether I am on board with it or not since I couldn't get through it. It seemed to want to categorize typical male and typical female behaviors. I am not big on categorizing anyone or anything since their are WAY too many anomalies in the human condition.

On the other hand... he is a multi-millionaire and is living his dream. It was a vehicle for his success so good for him!

I've never read the book so I can't really comment on that. But I do think that there are differences between the way men and women think and process ideas and emotions.

Why shouldn't there be a difference between us? Our bodies are different, our chemical makeup is different. We know what happens to bodies that have an overload of testosterone or estrogen - that alone can bring about physical and psychological changes.

I'm not going to pidgeonhole men so severely to say something like that all of them are bad at directions. But I read a study a while ago about the differences between the way men and women give someone verbal directions to someone who hasn't been somewhere. That women rely more on visual objects (turn left at the pink church, etc) than men do (turn left after 4 stoplights).

I hate that people think we are so different. It just perpetuates the gender stereotypes in my opinion

I've never read the book either but from what's been posted I think it says men and women are different and we should just deal with it, don't try to understand it. This is where I disagree. Of course, we're different. We're all different regardless of gender, there are so many other things that shape our psyches; you can't make bold statements that men and women are the way they are because of just one reason. And men and women aren't complete opposites either. Our similarities are what brings us together, then our differences are what bonds us to stay together. We need each other for the human race to continue, why wouldn't we try to understand the other sex?? Last year I read a great book called 'What could he be thinking?', it really helped me to understand what goes on in a man's mind and has opened my eyes to why they do the things they do!!!
