I'm Curious....
How many people have heard of tri tip or eaten it?It's a popular, and fairly inexpensive (but yummy), cut of meat where I live, but FH's family has no idea what I'm talking about. Is it not popular in NY?

it's beef, just cut a different way. People cut it into slices most the time after it's cooked. It's normally BBQ'd with some type of mesquite rub. I wanted to serve it at my RD since we are doing it at someone's house to cut costs and time, but I don't know if I can get it in NY. Sounds like maybe not from the poll responses

Nope, they aren't picky. I've made tostadas and other things before that they never heard of, and they seemed to love it.
I'm just not sure where to buy the meat.

I'm POSITVE it's not... Thank God! I'm not trying to posion my guests! It looks like any other meat, but it's normally solid in large quantities not thin steaks so that when it's BBQ'd it remains juicy and not dry... but definitely not the lining of a cow... I think I'll have to find a picture now

Re: I'm Curious....
In the United States, this cut was typically used for ground beef or sliced into steaks until the late 1950s, when it became a local specialty in Santa Maria, California, rubbed with salt, pepper, and other seasonings, and roasted whole on a rotisserie, smoked in a pit, or grilled, and then smothered with a tomato-based barbecue sauce. (The tri-tip is still often labeled 'Santa Maria steak'.) Most popular in the Central Coast region of California,[1] it has begun to enjoy increasing popularity elsewhere for its full flavor, lower fat content, and comparatively lower cost.Tri-tip has also become a popular cut of meat for producing Chili con carne on the competitive chili cooking circuit, supplanting ground beef because the low fat content produces little grease, for which judges take off points.
*uggh... pics won't post. But the cow chart says it's not from the stomach

Re: I'm Curious....
Maybe its called flank steak here? I know that is usually a cheaper grade of beef, and used for all the things you said above....and its from the stomach region.actually its the same pic you found never mind lol
