I'm worried about the puppy when I go to my son's wedding...

I just got the most adorable Maltese puppy who will be 6 months the day of my son's wedding. I am panicked thinking of him being alone. Has anyone left their dogs alone for 12 hours or so. We have to leave the house around 1:30 and we'll get home well after midnight. I never had a dog before and I don't know how to work out his food, or his paper training!!! I keep him in a fairly large bathroom when we go out. With him are his bed, a small traveling crate with the door open, his water, toys and his potty tray. He is well on his way to being trained, but won't go once it's soiled. How often do they poop at 6 months old? What can I expect?

I am really anxious to hear how others handle these situations.
Thanks.

Re: I'm worried about the puppy when I go to my son's wedding...

Hi ok, ive been here and still going through it with my 9 mon boxer, welp puppies have to pee about every 3- 4 hours and they cant hold it in cause their bladder is still small- also they have to have water all day. although my puppy has gone without water for a couple of hours he is also crate trained. that is so he trains himself to hold it in. i would not rec having the puppy alone for more than 5-6 hours. 12 in my opinion is way too long for the puppy to be by themselves. can a neighbor check on the puppy or any friends?

Re: I'm worried about the puppy when I go to my son's wedding...

we have 2 puppies about that age and they go constantly at least every 2 hours or so - if he wont after it is dirty you may want to board him at the vets for the day and pick him up in the morning - personally i am not leaving the puppies in the house during the wedding they are staying at their vets'
i am just worried that they may get into someting then noone will be home to take care of them if there is an emergency - in the bathroom - goodness we store alot of stuff in there - i can just see them eating hairspray - or toothpaste everywhere - goodness and lets not forget the soap - can you imagine -

LOL i am imagining them with bubbles comming out their noses

oh my

Re: I'm worried about the puppy when I go to my son's wedding...

All my friends will be at the wedding, and unfortunately, I just don't have those kind of neighbors.

I know 12 hours is much too long to leave him. That is why I'd love to figure it out now.

Can anyone recommend a really good place to board him for 24 hours? I would love to have peace of mind that day. Do all vets provide that service? Can you guess what it might cost?

Thanks so much for your ideas.

I'm in western Nassau - in Manhasset. $25 or even $50 from Sunday morning to Monday morning is fine! I would be happy just knowing Scooby is safe and comfortable.

Thanks Oakslady.

Re: I'm worried about the puppy when I go to my son's wedding...

for small dogs your looking at 10 -15 dollars for board most vets have boarding. I bring my dogs to westbury animal hospital they are great there and we also looked into west hills animal hospital they are also good from what we heard. we havent left our dogs there yet- thats only if westbury is full we wanted to check another facility just in case. It costs for my 70 lbs dog 20 a night including food and blanket and they groom her before she comes home- they have everything and the younger one we havent had to board yet but when abby was his size it was 15 its pretty cheap and they are safe.

Re: I'm worried about the puppy when I go to my son's wedding...

Oh my God, this is such good news. I didn't realize animal hospitals do that. I thought you have to go to a kennel with all sorts of animals - you know the horror stories we hear.

Thanks ever so much. I'm going to start making phone calls tomorrow.

PS. Is anyone familiar with North Shore Animal Hospital in Bayside? Do they board animals also?

Re: I'm worried about the puppy when I go to my son's wedding...

I have left my dog at the vet and I didn't like what I saw.
I recommend Cozy noses, bed and breakfast for dogs and cats. They are a bit away from you in Islandia in Suffolk County BUT THEY ARE AWESOME!! My cousins leave their 2 pitbulls (one was a puppy the 1st time) there all the time. My cleo <-----------, will be there for 13 days when I get married. Check them out, they even have a Nursery for little dogs/puppies. Their is always someone on site, and they will take Scooby out and walk him if you want too.

Does your puppy have all his shots? FM me for the number of Cozy noses.

Re: I'm worried about the puppy when I go to my son's wedding...

Thank you so much for the recommendations. I will definitely follow up with FM's if I have no luck with my own vet.
Your help is very thoughtful and greatly appreciated.
