I am having a hell of a time trying to teach my daughter her homework. I guess you can say that the school is advanced they teach the kids 1st grade work so I am trying to teach her how to add and subtract and how she should go about each one I get SSSOOO frustrated and I holler at her and I can see that she shuts down some because she starts to write her numbers wrong. I need to know where I can go to have someone with more patience and experience teach her how it is done and I am GREAT at reenforcing what she has learned. With the spelling, language arts and science we do just fine it is just the MATH that is doing me in. Not to mention that I am 3 months prego w/ morning & evening sicknes so I am not a happy camper anyway. I need help any info is appreciated.

Re: I need a Kindergarten Tutor
Does she recognize all of her numbers? Is she able to form them the right way? I dont really think addition and subtraction is developmentaly appropriate for kindergarten. (At least not this early in the school year). I teach first grade...

Re: I need a Kindergarten Tutor
i teach kindergarten and I don't agree w/the math either, it's tough!! In regards to adding/subtracting, try to show her with objects. Kids at her age have a hard time accepting concepts without actually seeing the explanation. For example, use cookies or cherioes and make up math stories....start with 5 cookies, ask her how many you have and let her count them. Then ask her to write the #5. Add 1 cookie and ask her how many you have now...have her write the answer. Do the same with subtracting except have her eat them(this make it fun..)Explan to her that this is adding/subtracting. Have her do it with other objects around the house or when you are out. If you make it a game, it becomes fun instead of stressful! Good luck!

Re: I need a Kindergarten Tutor
I agree with sha11209 and Christy 100%!
I have taught kindergarten for 6 years- the last 2 years has been in full day kindergarten in a very competative district and I do have to say that most kindergarteners are not ready for those concepts. Many are capable of comprehending them and some are just not ready.
I would definately just keep working with her using anything she can manipulate (coins, dolls, blocks etc). Do simple problems first like 2+1, 3+1 etc. until she gets the concept more. How hard are the problems the teacher is giving?
I'm glad she is doing well in all the other areas. What does the teacher suggest about the math?
If your daughter's kindergarten program is full day, she is probably tired and sick of school at the end of the day. She probably wants to relax and play when she gets home. If you do get a tutor, make sure she understands this and makes her lessons into a game and not seem like work.

Re: I need a Kindergarten Tutor
Thanks ladies she does recognize her numbers and she knows how to write them the only ones that are giving her a hard time is 6 and 9. The types of problems are like this 6+2= then underneath it would have 10- =2 and she will have to fill in the blanks and it is like 25 problems on a page. The text book is a 1st grade book. The teacher doesn't say much but the other kids in the class don't have a problem finishing in a timely fashion I am just glad that she is trying and when she gets the answers correct she is very happy. Other times I see that she is afraid to be wrong.
