As I have posted in the last few weeks, I am quitting my job. I have run into a few problems, though. I am a teacher at a 12 month school, but I am a 10 month employee. I was planning on giving my notice next week and make graduation, June 18, my last day. My parents are on my case about this now, and I think they are right. I do not have a job lined up yet for September ( I am also moving from MA to NY), and as soon as I quit my job, my health insurance is up. I have been very sick the last few weeks and can't imagine going without insurance. BUT, I HATE this job. It is making me miserable and I can't take it much longer. I have been dodging my boss who wants me to come back in August to do some sort of a talent show with the kids. Now, if I DON'T tell her I am leaving and wait until I find something else to tell her, I will feel awful and I don't know how to plan this talent show without leaving them high and dry when I don't come back in Aug. But if I DO tell her, and I don't find a job, I can always go back to this job in the Fall. Which, I do not want to do, but at least I have something to fall back on. I am not so worried about the money aspect because I teach privately in NY and make the same amount of money. I am only really worried about the insurance and about how to deal with the issue of pretending that I will be there this summer to produce this huge production for the kids. Whew, that was long and I hope it made sense, but what should I do? I am going nuts over this! Thanks!

have you looked into how much COBRA would be so that you could continue your insurance? IMO - i wouldn't go without insurance. it's just a bad omen to me.
you indicated that you teach privately also. are you considered self-employed?? can you get some kind of health insurance through that??
good luck!!!

It would probably be about $300/month to carry COBRA coverage. Are you moving back in with your parents, instead of paying rent like you were in MA? If so, then maybe you can swing the $300/month.
I just got my offer and it was $900 for DH and me...we said no way...
there are other insurances...and there are clinics that offer discounted health care...
I hated my job...and insurance wasn't enough to get me to stay there...

FAmily plan cobra is so much more expensive then individual coverage. I paid cobra of like 280 when I was out of work.

I am still paying most of the rent in MA for FH who can only work a certain amount of hours a week because of school, so I cannot afford to pay for health insurance. Yet, my next idea was to teach at night my private students (I'm not considered a small business), and go back to finish my masters full time and get insurance that way. I don't know. I am so confused, but I went all last summer without insurance and I was freaked out the whole 3 months!

Yeah, no insurance is kinda risky. And from what I hear t's sooo hard to get a teaching job in NY now (may be easier for music teachers, not sure) so you also have to think about what would happen if you didn't get an offer for Sept.

Seriously, I am not counting on getting a teaching job for the fall. I am really only looking at private schools because I still have work to do for my certification. I would like to finish my masters up and get a job in a college, so the public school system is not even that appealing to me. But we'll see, I mean, the insurance in a college stinks, but at least it's something, and I can get my masters done. See, this is what I keep doing, going back and forth, back and forth... Thanks ladies!

I have a friend who bought her own insurance.... & for only the Dr.'s she needed, general and obgyn. If Cobra is not an option, perhaps you can look into that. I know she pays $180 a month for these 2 Dr.'s Hope that helps!

I wouldn't quit. Why loss out on paid insurance? If they ask you to work the summer state you can't for any number of reasons. I wouldn't bother giving notice until need be. It's none of their business what you plan to do in the future, just deal with them on a today basis.
