i'm a speech therapist at a schoo. we work on how kid pronounce sounds, but we also work on kids with language issues- like difficulty with reading comprehension.
even with young kids, i use a lot of graphic organizers like timelines, venn diagrams, etc. i would read a story to the kid and then have them fill out a timeline with what happened first, next, last, etc.. in the story. you can also work in other questions while you're doing this lke ' ok, good. FIRST the boy went to the store. WHY did he go to the store?'
you could also have them draw pictures of what happened in the story and make a timeline and talk about them.

Great ideas - I always emphasize schools to use graphic organizers (I am an autism consultant - kids who are mainstreamed do well, but need those visuals!!!)

also - drawing pics is a great idea!

great! glad i helped a little bit... i got cut off before... but i also watned to add that the author jan brett has a big website with a bunch of activities to go with her books.... just google her name, and it should come up.... those books are right at the first/secnod grade level...
with one of my secnod graders the other day- we read a book about clifford the big red dog- then we made a 'chart' of thigns clifford did bad, things he did good, and things he and emily elizabeth liked to do together.... just have that visual to organize what we had just read really helped her.
LOL another thing i've done is taken the rules to a card game or a new game the kids don't know how to play ( like dominoes), written them out and read them ( make them to the childs level) - then, we get to play the game- its a fun way to check how much the child remembers from what they just read.
