We went for the blood testing on Saturday which was just a nightmare (more for me). They couldn't get enough blood because he was screaming so they got just enough to do the allergy testing.
Got a call this morning from my ped - Ryan is HIGHLY allergic to milk and wheat. So now it's off to the allergist on Friday for more tests. They need to see what other foods he is allergic to.
I KNOW that there are so many worse things in life that could happen and I am so grateful for the fact that he is overall a healthy baby. But I am sooo sad about this. I keep thinking no ice cream, no cheerios, so many fun things my baby will miss out on...
The dr. says there is a chance it gets better as he gets bigger, but I can't help feeling sad. Does anyone have any experience or know anyone whose baby had food allergies at such a young age?? I feel lost...

Lee, dont worry about it
A mommyfriend I know, her son is VERY allergic to wheat also. He saw him accidentally touch another childs bowl with wheat cereal and she RAN to wash her sons hands, face etc. Im sure allergies are very common with little ones. and there are SO many products made now for those that are allergic to one thing or another. Lactose free ice creams, and so many other cereals for your sweetie pie to enjoy.
Keep us posted. Youre a great mommy, dont feel sad. Ryan will enjoy SO MUCH other yummy stuff

Sorry to hear about his allergies. I know many time babies grow out of allergies, especially wheat and milk.

I am allergic to milk and it really isn't that bad! Infact, most of my family is allergic to it. I can limit my amounts of dairy and still be OK...plus with all the stuff they have now-a-days, it's pretty easy to 'treat.' The only thing I can't drink is milk because it use to make me so sick when I was younger.

Lee - hugs to you.
I am not a mommy, but as a baby I was very allergic to milk, refined sugars, my formula and various other foods. I could not have cow's milk at all and I was on a special, pretty limited diet. But I did grow out of it and now I can enjoy all milk products And the best part is that I do not remember having a limited diet at all. So perhaps Ryan will grow out of it too. Little ones have sensitive stomachs and that could change

Oh Lee, I'm so sorry to hear about poor little Ryan!!! Big hugs to you and him!!
My cousin's son had several allergies to things when he was a baby, but he outgrew some of them as he got older. Hopefully that'll be the case for Ryan!!!

Ohh poor Mommy - He may grow out if it.
Many Many Moons ago I was born allergic to milk. I drank soy until age 3. On an outing with my dear uncle (not knowing any better) he gave me ice cream. My Mom was shocked that I had no reaction at all. She started me slowly on milk and I was fine. Fast-Forward about 25 years I discovered that I was again lactose intolerant. Go Figure

Re: I need my LIW friends...
my younger brother had very bad asthma as a baby -- and was allergic to Milk-- my Mom had to ' make' a formula for him -- with evaporated milk and vitamins.. Back then they did not have the formulas they have today -- anyway -- he grew out of it -- and has no allergies to date-- and he is 24 !

Re: I need my LIW friends...
Thank you all so much for your support and for your kind words. You make me feel so much better and you make me realize that there is a chance Ryan could outgrow this.
It's just that I feel that maybe somewhere I did something wrong. Like, I should have BF'd longer than I did, or something. I don't know....
Thank you again ladies, it's always so nice to know you are here!! I'll let you know how it goes with the allergist...

Lee in today's time there is so much that lil Ryan will be able to have that he will not even miss milk. I wish you all the best, he probably wouldn't like it anyway.

Poor Ryan!! I am sure it won't end up being a big deal. We have lots of kids at school with different food allergies, and they don't appear the least bit bothered by them.
I'd put some smiley hugs here, but my smilies STILL aren't working!!!

Lee - Ryan will be fine regardless! It is okay to be sad, it will probably be a hard adjustment and some work on your part but you can do it. It is so not your fault! I am sure there must be sites on-line for info about those allergies and how to deal with them. I know my friend's son is allergic to eggs and she found a lot of resources on line about it, including recipes, etc.

Re: I need my LIW friends...
I hope Ryan feels better And I hope he grows out of his allergies. I didn't have an allergy to milk, but don't like the taste of it and never drank it, and I feel as though I grew up ok
