I need my LIW friends...

Original post by Lee

I'm in tears here - my poor Ryan!

We went for the blood testing on Saturday which was just a nightmare (more for me). They couldn't get enough blood because he was screaming so they got just enough to do the allergy testing.

Got a call this morning from my ped - Ryan is HIGHLY allergic to milk and wheat. So now it's off to the allergist on Friday for more tests. They need to see what other foods he is allergic to.

I KNOW that there are so many worse things in life that could happen and I am so grateful for the fact that he is overall a healthy baby. But I am sooo sad about this. I keep thinking no ice cream, no cheerios, so many fun things my baby will miss out on...

The dr. says there is a chance it gets better as he gets bigger, but I can't help feeling sad. Does anyone have any experience or know anyone whose baby had food allergies at such a young age?? I feel lost...

Re: I need my LIW friends...

One of my best friends has a daughter who, as a baby, had allergies to all dairy, beef, and soy. It took a couple of months to figure this out (plus numerous tests) but it came down to that. My friend was BFing and could not consume anything her daughter was allergic to. My friend was hoping to stop BFing when she turned one, but the doctor said that her daughter would have a good chance of outgrowing her allergies if she continued to eat breast milk until she was 18 months old, which she did. She did outgrow the allergy and is a happy and healthy 4 year old.

Babies generally will outgrow food allergies when they get older. My sister was allergic to dairy products as a kid, but she eventually outgrew most of the allergies by the time she was a teen. Now she's just lactose-intolerant (there is a difference between being lactose-intolerant and allergic to dairy). I will keep my fingers crossed for little Ryan. I think that the best thing you can do is research these allergies (when you have the time).

Thank you all again sooo much!! I really appreciate hearing any and all info you have. I guess as a Mom I can't help but blame myself, but I have to now arm myself with info and do everything I have to do for my baby!!

Hopefully Friday's skin tests won't be too much of a nightmare -- for me!

Re: I need my LIW friends...

Lee, when I was an adolescent (don't remember how old), they did the skin tests on me. Turns out that I'm allergic to milk, corn, eggs, oranges, tomatoes, and chocolate. This was news to me, since I've never had any symptoms of these allergies before; only airborne allergens.

Even if your son is allergic to milk and wheat now doesn't mean that it's going to be an issue for his entire life. And sometimes...doctors are wrong.

And please don't think that there's anything you could have done to prevent allergies. That's just silliness!
