I need quick advice please....

I just got a message from one of my private students ( I teach flute privately), and he said he has to cancel his lesson for Tuesday afternoon because he has a Tennis match, but he has a competition on Thursday, so can I come anytime today? I have not called him back, but I do not want to drive an hour to see this kid today. I have things to do and Sunday is my ONE day I don't teach. But at the same time, the kid needs a lesson. I feel it's up to him to prioritize, and if it's that important to him to have a lesson, he needs to skip his match, and if not, then he has to go without the lesson before his competition. What should I do? Should I go today or tell him sorry? I feel bad not going today, but I have to draw the line somewhere and I bend over backwards for these kids as it is.

He or his parent should have contacted you sooner. You're not an on-call doctor. Do your own thing, he should be conforming to YOUR schedule!

If you do decide to go, I would charge double.

Oh, you bet your sweet arse I would charge him double! But in all honesty, this is ridiculous. You cannot call me on a Sunday and expect me to run to your house because I am SURE his tennis coach did not call him this morning to tell him his match is on Tuesday. Ok, thanks Lori, I'm NOT going

Ok, I just called him back, and before I could even say anything he apologized for calling me on a Sunday, but that he thought he would make a last ditch effort. He said he'd be fine and that was that. I love kids, but man I just want to slap them some days! (mind you he's 17, so he's really not a 'kid' anymore)

I go through the same thing. I do private tutoring for the SAT and I get kids who try to call me the day of to reshedule and it dirves me nuts. One night I drove all the wya out to Breezy point and I was sick, and I get there and the mom is like 'Well he has to leave in five minutes, we forgot he has a birthdya party. Try to get paid for at least an hour'. Umm..don't worry about it, honey..I got paid for 2 hours. I wanted to commit murder. I really did. And then another time I drove to another kid's house and the pareents werent answering the bell for about 10 minutes ..and then they reluctantly did and the kid wasn't there! She had tried to call me at home but I had alreayd left. And they tried to act like it was my fault.. GRRRRRRRR!!!!
