I need quick help!! was or is anyone able to put FH on Health Insurance before marriage?(UPDATE)

I heard if you can prove you live with them that they can be put on your plan. Anybody ever hear of this. I am going up to my school now to try and get him on.Thanks!!

At my previous job, if you had proof that you lived together for 6 months, you can add a domestic partner onto your insurance. Not sure if all companies work this way though

You have to check whether your insurance has a policy with regard to domestic partners and then find out what the parameters are.

You may be able to put him on your insurance based on the domestic partnership laws. He would have to live with you and your finances should be commingled. I was able to do this with my husband, but I could only add him during the yearly enrollment period for my plan.

Ugh - I had such problems with this!!!

FH used to work for a company in NJ, which included me on his health insurance as his 'domestic partner.' He now works in NY. I was told that NY health insurance plans do not insure domestic partners; we have to be officially married!!

This caused me a lot of grief, and my pay raise ended up mainly paying for my own health insurance. (I even considered getting married on paper and having the actual ceremony and reception later to save myself $1,000's of dollars, but my father is dead-set against it.)

If anyone knows of a NY health insurance plan that insures domestic partners, please let me know too!! Thanks!!

Thanks girls!! See thats the thing, we are getting married in February. We have yearly enrollment. So If I don't get him on my plan at the beginning of this school year, He has to wait until next september for health insurance.

Are you sure about that, because if you have a child and it is not open enrollment, then you don't have to wait.

My husbands job said that when we get married I can be put on up to 30 dyas after the wedding, anything past that, he has to wait until open enrollment.

Fh is a teacher in NYC., he was able to add me as a domestic partner, but we went thru a lot to get me added on! We had tons of paper work to do, I had to prove who I was, get notarized papers, then had to have a joint bank account, joint credit card, same address on our drivers licenses, etc. I finally went on it, but it took about 8 months to get me on it, and the red tape was horrific. We took a few days off of work and had to go into the city to the union alot, etc. I am happy to be on it, but it did take a long time to show who we were becuase there was so much paper work, and proof you had to show, etc. It was like they asked the same thing over and over again, in different ways. We also had to register as domestic partners with the city. I hope this helped.

My company requires 12 month proof of financial sharing as well as 12month proof of shared residence both in writing for domestic partnership.

Even then the domestic partner doesnt get benefits until the new year.

HOWEVER! If we get married (and we are this October for this very reason) he is added automatically to my policy with no wait. All I have to do is show them the marriage certificate.

I'd double check on that effective date.

I work in health plan administration and you should be able to add a new spouse to your coverage with, usually its 31 days of your date of marriage. Usually if you miss that date then you have to wait for annual enrollment. Domestic partners are not commonly offered and when they are sometimes it is only for same sex partners. So check into that. You should be able to add him mid year due to your 'qualifying event' (your marriage) Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone. I just got back from my school. They said I can't add him now, they don't do that. But the woman told me to come back in January and we will set it up to add him. He will begin his coverage on our wedding day!!! Yeah! Now I don't have to get a gift for him, I am giving him health insurance!! Just kidding!!
