So my Fiance and his Family are 100% greek and I am not greek. Needless to say I am getting married in a greek church even though me nor my families opinions were really considered, anyway my FMIL wants to play 15 greek songs at the wedding, and like 2 songs from crete and more then half the guests are my family who once again are non-greek. I dunno what to do because I think this is to many and that so many people will just be sitting around because my family doesn know this music. Plus his mother doesnt even know the songs and is trying to have someone find them, how important are they if you dont even know them. Between the first dance, parent dance, cake, dinner and other little things I would not have heard anything I want because of all the greek music. I am fine with playing like one an hr, what should I do??? Heelp and I am to nice to say anything.

ask her to play a few less songs, or actually you are the one giving in a playlist so give in a few less songs. My parents also had to have romanian music, i told them i am not going to play tons of songs though, but i did have to play some. When they came on ill say that everybody still stayed on the dancefloor and did a big circle, kinda like the hora(sp?)
ive been to greek parties, and even many non-greeks still participate. So your family can still have fun and dance to greek music

So just say ok you'll put them on your list, and then don't.. Just put the two you like. She'll never notice and if she does just tell them that you put it on the lists....the DJ just didn't play them.... oh well... So your innocent!!!

You need to speak up or have fh speak to his mom. We as brides have all made considerations for different reasons/people and apparently you have already done so by marrying in the church FMIL wanted. Tell her to pick 1 or 2 songs she really wants and that is it because there are other people that she has to consider (your guests) Remember..it is your day !!!

I would chose a few Greek songs and have them mixed in with the other music...this way, people dancing will most likely not leave the dance floor for one song they may not know.

you might be surprised at people's reaction to the music. before dinner, all the DJ played was american music, and not too many people danced. my DH is portuguese, and everyone on his side pretty much just stayed glued to their seats when american music was played. after dinner, they started to play portuguese music, and that's when people really started to dance and get into the party. both his side and my side were up dancing. had i known that would've happened, i would have requested more portuguese music!

well if it was me id tell her to kiss my a$$
what does your FH say? is it important to him to play greek songs? and have a greek ceremony? everything in our wedding is what FH and I want - we are not doing anything to please our parents because they are not paying for it and they already had their weddings - this is OUR wedding and its going to be everything that WE want.....i dont see anything wrong with playing a few greek songs but if its more songs than you and your FH are comfortable with than i wouldnt play all of them....

Thats the whole thing, I feel like its not my day. I am having a ceremony that follows non of my traditions but I went along with it and now this, I just want it to be about me and my fiance and not everyone else, but I am to shy and nice and will never say anything to her about it, I will just keep it bottled up till I cant take it and then take it out on fiance.

In a very nice way you can explain that you are trying to make the wedding about the two of you and your families comming together, therefore its important you you have things that reflect both families. Maybe that means having a ceremony at your hall instead and having some parts from a greek ceremony and some parts from what ever religion or nationality you are. Or having teh greek church allow you to have some of your traditons incorporated. Let her give you 15 greek songs and tell the dj or band to do only about 6 of them. Are his parents paying for the wedding and all the vendors?

its true, when we had ethnic songs come on since we had to play both my side and his side, a few songs though, everybody got up and even i was surprised, young, old and no matter what background everyone participated

same here; none of DH's side danced until the spanish music came on; then they were all up there. I told the DJ to just keep playing more of that!

Well i am marrying a greek also, and I am italian, so we compromised, we will be playing greek, italian and american. We let the band know that if he sees no one is dancing, switch up the music.
In the end, it doesnt matter what music is playing, as long as people are up and dancing that is what counts!

honestly, then greek music being played isn't your biggest issue. You need to communicate with your FH and let him know how you feel and make sure he takes your wants into consideration. This is not the right way to go about things, its better to talk about it now before you blow up on him. ALso you dont want to deal with this for the rest of your life, try to fix the problem now

Re: I need some serious advice!
Give the list to your DJ and have him play one or two, tell him if the response is good to mix in a few more.. if noone wants to dance then tell him to not play anymore... Who knows maybe your family will find it really fun and different. My FH is Puerto Rican so were having some latin music, I know it will make his family get up so I am glad to do it for them.. My family will dance to anything with a good beat sooo i hoping it all goes over smoothly.. Also my family is mostly italian so were having a Sinatra type singer during dinner, the older folk looove their Sinatra.

Re: I need some serious advice!
well u should def stand up and say how u feel.. You can't let her do what she wants at your wedding, is your wedding after all... Just let her know that she have to realize that the majority of the ppl are non-greeks so u cant be playing 90% of the wedding greek music..................tell her that u wanna be fair, so it should be better if u guys only pick a few and then, switch to other type of music.... i understand you, my FMIL is controlling too to the point where she frustates me, but if u dont say anythin, she would keep imposing what she wants/.....good luck

Re: I need some serious advice!
DH family is Italian (his parents are both from Italy) and his grandparents who live here don't speak English. I found a band that sings in both Italian and English without DH asking me to because I wanted his family to feel comfortable also. Now none of my family is Italian (well maybe some are like 3rd or 4th generation LOL) but EVERYONE loved the italian songs and all of our guests were dancing to them and loved them. Try to remain open minded you never know your guests might wind up loving the Greek music!
